As you all know that Cyclone Thane has hit Cuddalore coast last week. Eureka (AID INDIA) has been involved rehabilitation work in a large number of villages in Cuddalore. A day after Cyclone Thane crossed the Tamil Nadu coast, leaving 46 people dead in south India, life was limping back to normal yesterday in the worst affected Cuddalore district. However, people had to usher in the New Year in darkness. At least 46 people have died in the south " 35 in Tamil Nadu, four in Kerala and seven in Puducherry " due to electrocution, falling of trees and collapsing roofs or walls. "Major roads are being cleared of uprooted trees and traffic is being resumed. People are returning to their homes or going to the homes of their relatives from relief camps. Life is coming back to normal," Cuddalore Deputy Superintendent of Police S. Vanitha said. Several trees, street lampposts and electric poles were uprooted on Friday at Cuddalore by the cyclone that packed a wind speed of 140km/h when it crossed the coast. With reports of five more deaths coming in from different parts of Cuddalore district, the death toll in Friday's devastating cyclone went up to 31 in the district, taking the total number of fatalities in the disaster to 48 in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Union territory accounted for eight deaths, and Tamil Nadu 40, nine of them in districts other than Cuddalore. "Since there is no power for the last four days, we cannot store groundwater in tanks. We have run out of water. Though the municipality is undertaking relief operations, our woes remain as there are not enough staff," he said. Another bunch of people are taking advantage of desperate customers seeking to contact relatives and friends, demanding Rs 10 to charge their mobile phones. "They have started operations like in Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations. We have to somehow get cellphones charged since half the work we do daily is through phones. And almost 99 per cent of landline connections in the district are out of service since December 30," Satish said. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board sources said that power, which was turned of on December 29 night, is likely to be restored in the main areas in Cuddalore town by this evening, but that it would take another two to three days in peripheral areas. Satish said people now realised the importance of the media and recalled hearing rumours yesterday about an earthquake striking the coast, which he later clarified through a friend had struck Japan. "Even for knowing when we will get back electricity and milk and water supply, we rely on TVs and radio channels. Due to power disruption, we can't even know that," Ganapathy, a driver of a state transport corporation bus said. Govt has set up relief camps in several main villages. But people in the interior hamlets still need basic relief support. 2. Many huts in the interior villages have been totally destroyed. Eureka team is supporting to re-build the huts once the rain stops. 3. There is a need for food and clothes supply. Eureka team is making local arrangement for food in some places. Team has been asked to collect clothes as they will be needed in large numbers. 4. Most roads are blocked and travel is currently not easy. Once Govt clears the roads, we can have volunteers visiting and helping with relief work.
