Edema And Its Treatment

By: altruist Home | Health-and-Fitness | Alternative-Medicine

Fluid accumulation in the body tissues and the area around the organs of the body is recognized as edema. Understanding the reason that leads to the condition is often the best method for edema treatment. Edema is commonly observed in the lower body or the hands, chest region or the abdomen. Heart failure may cause fluids to collect in the chest region, a condition known as pulmonary edema. This can sometimes be fatal in case it is not treated in time.

Swollen feet and ankles are quite common in people who are on their feet a lot, such as dentists, cashiers or barbers. The problem usually disappears with rest and an appropriate change in daily habits. If a job requires a good deal of standing, the employee should take hourly breaks to sit down and, if possible, raise the feet for a few minutes. This edema occurs when the veins in the lower extremities fail to keep pace with the arteries, the outward flow of blood lagging behind the inward flow. If the large veins of the lower extremities are actually diseased, the edema brought on by standing is likely to be very noticeable.

Diet: A good general diet that alleviates chronic inflammation is useful. The diet should especially contain enough sources of omega-3-fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids, like: Fat fish, seafood, flax oil, olive oil, almonds, rape oil and canola oil. Also vegetables and fruit in a natural shape are useful.

Avoiding constipation: Constipation should be treated, since a stomach engorged by excessive content can cause impairment of fluid circulation.

Symptoms:

One symptom is when, initially, the feet and legs will appear swollen as the day progresses, but after a period of time, the swelling will set in first thing in the morning and continue to worsen throughout the day.

There's probably a certain amount of edema that we can live with when it's found to not be a problem.
But, it can become serious - particularly if the edema is advanced and has been around for a while - it might cause pitting (as mentioned above, when you press on the swollen area for a few seconds, you will notice an indentation in that area that continues long after the finger-pressure is removed). Continued swelling can cause skin ulcerations.

Treatment and Prevention

If you know that you are prone to suffer from edema during pregnancy, prevention should be your focus. Your diet is a big part of treating edema during pregnancy. You should be getting enough protein, as well as paying close attention to your sodium intake. Too little sodium in your diet can cause muscle cramping. However, too much can lead to an increase in all forms of edema, including preeclampsia. It is also important that you are drinking enough water on a daily basis.

Laser Treatment used to be the mainstay for treating macular edema, that is, swelling of the retina caused by leaky retinal blood vessels. The macular edema is the most common way diabetic patients can lose vision and it happens to almost every patient.
