A Guide To Buy An Efficient Kitchen Range Hood

By: David Scott Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Appliances

Kitchen hoods are obviously the only way to keep the kitchen grime free. There are also stainless steel hood, which are effective and has a very contemporary design. You know what kitchen hoods are but when you are all set to purchase one, you need to find answers to questions like these- How many types of hoods are available? How do they keep the kitchen clean? What are the desired specifications? What is the exhaust system like? Are they very expensive? Will it increase the aesthetics of my house? Once you answer these questions, you know exactly what your desire in your kitchen range hood.

There are basically three types of hoods available-fixed, canopy and retractable. The fixed one is quite large, attached to the wall, covers the stove area completely and is the least expensive. The retractable kitchen range hood is very sleek. It can be pulled up while cooking and folded in when you are not using the kitchen. Though it is expensive, it is not very powerful. The wall mounted or island canopy has the maximum power.

When the cooking process is taking place in the kitchen, just a little boiling of water may cause a lot of steam or frying may cause smoke. The impure air is sucked in by the internal fan present inside the hood, which either coverts the impure air to pure air or it vents it out depending on the exhaust system used. If a stainless range hood is used, it even protects against corrosion.

The exhaust system is basically of two types- external and internal type. The external type kitchen range hood vents out the contaminated cooking by-product through a duct to maintain a clean kitchen. Whereas an internal type hood restores clean air inside the kitchen by using charcoal filters. The filters are supposed to be replaced by new ones from time to time.

When it comes to specifications, the CFM is the most important thing to note. The cubic feet per meter rate is said to be the most desirable when it is equal to the product of the kitchen’s volume and the total number of air changes by the hood, per hour. Higher rates are appreciable. This obviously has a disadvantage as it leads to high noise levels in the hood; the higher the CFM, more the noise. To counter this noise, one can use a centrifugal fan, which is known to give good performance. It must not be complicated to clean.

Not all kitchen range hood are expensive. Though buying a little expensive one is quite a practical decision as it can be used for many years to come. There is a direct tradeoff between performance and cost in hoods. The copper range hood is much more durable but people still prefer the less expensive steel range hood to save a little money. If high efficiency is not your concern, you can always settle for the cheaper models.

The Kitchen range hood is available in distinct shapes and sizes, which would definitely contribute to the aesthetics of your house. The stainless range hood has become more colorful now, which is attracting customers. The kitchen range hood designers are going berserk with themes and patterns so that something as simple as stainless range hood looks like a million bucks.
