Baby Boomer Women Have An Easy Life - But Are They Prepared To Pay The Price?

By: Gen Wright Home | Health-and-Fitness

Times have certainly changed for women. Can you imagine our mothers going to the gym and using the equipment, picking up a dumbbell and doing strength exercises or doing a set of pushups? Not likely, it just did not happen back then.

Women were much more active as part of their everyday tasks and activities. They did not need to go to the gym; they struggled to get all their work done during the day.

Now-a-days modern women do not have to hardly lift a finger, with a huge array of gadgets and appliances to do every job that used to be done manually.

Our lives are so easy and convenient and most of us sit for up to 80 percent of the day at our job and again back at home on the couch. But unfortunately, there is a price for that ease and convenience. We get fat and we get sick. Very sick. Bit ticket killer diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes are now the norm stalking and striking six out of every ten of us.

You see the human body cannot remain healthy without vigorous movement that 'works' the muscular system. Whether we like it or not and although that word 'work' has long been banished from our easy-peasy lives it does not mean the human body has adapted to its removal.

Our bodies have been designed to be active, highly active and physical, exactly the same as enabled our ancient ancestors to 'hunt and forage' and survive harsh conditions. Our genetic blueprint is unchanged and when we sit around and allow our bodies to become weak it does not just affect our muscles.

Right down at cellular level chemicals start whispering to the cells telling them this organism is not using its strength so it is no longer productive, so that means it is no longer needed. Instructions are given to set it into shut down mode so the resources available will go to those with offspring to feed and take care of. Nothing personal meant, just natures efficient systems working for the greater survival of the species.

In this shut down mode, old worn out cells and tissues are not repaired, renewed, rebuilt and replaced at the same rate as they should be. This is because 'growth and repair' hormones are not being stimulated and released in the only way the human body is programmed for - vigorous muscular activity.

If you want to switch off this downward spiral of declining strength, increase of body fat, loss of energy, loss of muscle tissue and bone density and increasing risk of disease from a faltering weakening immune system we each are going to have to get up from our chairs. We then need to get ourselves along to the local gym or fitness center and get started on a proper strength training program and never stop.

Nothing less than an intentional proper strength training program will do this job so forget your low intensity 'walk' or bit of gardening for after you have done your proper program and put a bit of effort into it.

Just 2-3 sessions each week is all that it takes, so much for so little. Our mothers would think we have it really easy if this is the only 'work' we have to do.
