Most cameras, especially SLR cameras where you can interchange lenses, come with a lot of extras. A typical conundrum when you travel is you never can be certain which of them you could make use of. Most of them are useful but there are also those others that are, you know, just cool. When you are getting ready to go on a trip, remove all of the things that rarely use and then read on to discover the top 10 things you will need in your camera bag. 1. Batteries - one in the camera and at least two spare (sets of) batteries. This very is important if you are traveling during the holidays. 2. Battery charger - take a battery charger that has an adaptable capable for use in all circumstances. This is especially important when traveling abroad; check voltages and plugs for the countries you will be visiting. 3. Extra Memory - do not settle for low-res images and don't get caught trying to delete photos on your trip while a great opportunity passes you by. 4. Rain Sleeve - it can rain anywhere at any time and having one of these in your bag won't take up hardly any room. Hopefully you'll never use it but it is nice knowing it's there. 5. Lenses - Bring along a wide angle and telephoto lens or get an "all-in-one" (18-200mm) to get the most flexibility and don't forget a polarizing filter. 6. Compact Tripod or Monopod - you never know when you might want to get a great panoramic shot or find yourself in low light. 7. Cleaning Cloths - keep both the camera and lenses clean. Bring along cleaning fluid, brushes and other supplies. 8. Flash - the puny built in flash is only good up to about 10ft and if you plan to get any good shots indoors or at night it will be your greatest ally. 9. USB Cable/Card Reader and Video Cable - overlooked too often you will want to make sure you are backing up your pictures. The Video cable will let you see your pictures on your families or the hotel TV. 10. Camera Bag - other than the camera, the most important thing you carry is the bag itself. The bag should be at the very least water resistant; we all know that water and electronics is a terrible combination. As an added measure you can use dessicants (those little pillow like things you find inside new shoes) to soak up any moisture that may build up inside your case. There you have it, with these items you will be prepared to take photographs wherever life takes you. Having a great camera and all the extras at your finger tips will make the vacation all the more enjoyable.
