10 Tips To Remember When Searching For A Hospitality Job

By: Gen Wright Home | Business | Careers-Employment

The hospitality industry is great for those that love working with people. They make or break any company. If they don't like your service then they will not return. If you are on the hunt for a hospitality job but aren't having any luck then you should check out these ten tips that will provide you with ideas for job searches and help you to search for a hospitality job.

1.Make sure that you sign up for all online job websites in the hospitality industry. Newspapers are a thing of the past. People don't advertise there too much anymore. It is cheaper and quicker to post a job online. You can even get alerts from these sites when someone has just placed a new job that matches your criteria.

2.Network to everyone. Even if you think that somebody that you know only works in one area unrelated to your desires you don't know who they might know. The more people that have an idea of your qualifications and jobs you are looking for they will be on the lookout for you. You can literally have dozens of people actively helping you in your job search. Make sure that you provide them with an email address and cell phone number in case they need to pass along your information.

3.Your resume' needs to be up to date. Any jobs, education, associations, or activities that you've done that are relevant to your job search should be listed. If you haven't completed this in a while then you should be ashamed. For the future you should always keep a copy of your resume on file and on your computer just in case your computer crashes or you lose your paperwork.

4.If you do get an interview you should be prepared. If possible try and get a friend or family member to hold a mock interview with you so that you can practice your interview techniques. You don't want to be eliminated at the interview.

5.As you are aggressively looking for a job you need to make sure that you are accessible. You need to have an email address, cell and home phone numbers. And your home number should have an answering system. If you aren't out and don't have a cell phone you might miss out on a potential job interview if you cannot get back to the employer in time.

6.Don't eliminate a job just because it isn't a permanent position. Your main objective is to get employed. If you are offered a job but it only lasts for six months and you have no other opportunities in sight accept the job. It will provide you with more experience and something else to put on your resume'. Once you are employed there it might lead to a full-time position or you'll find out about other jobs that they post before the general public.

7.Use a recruiter it won't cost you anything. There are many that specialize in the hospitality field. Employers are the ones that pay the fee when you are hired.

8.Make sure you follow up with the company after you've had an interview. Send a thank you letter. Also if you aren't hired you might ask them the reason why not. This will help you to improve yourself for the next interview.

9.Many of the larger hospitality companies are in always the main target for job hunters. You can be different and locate some of the smaller companies. The same goes for smaller towns. They are often overlooked and won't have as much competition.

10.Make sure that you are knowledgeable on any potential employer when you go to your interview. They want to know that you are interested in them. You have to sell yourself. You can do this by showing them you took the time to find out about their company and how you can benefit them.
