Buying any type of sewage system is like choosing a marriage partner...... â€..so it's worth making the right choice. You have a long time to live with any foibles. Once installed, it can affect your lifestyle and budget †nagging noise, odourous discharges, high maintenance, lots of electricity wastage and even failing vital parts. Here are some vital questions to ask first: 1. To what level does the system treat? And how is it able to benefit your garden? There are three main levels of treatment: A. Primary treatment can be dispersed in trenches only ie septic tank B. Secondary treatment can be used for sub-surface and/or surface irrigation. It can be used for lawns, flowers and trees. C. Tertiary treatment can be reused to flush the toilet and wash clothes. 2. How much does it cost? Check to see if there are any extra costs ie freight, installation and irrigation? 3. How often is it serviced? Check if it needs a quarterly service. Some companies make a lot of money simply from frequent servicing. 4. Does it have to be periodically desludged - at a cost to you? Nearly every septic tank, aerated system and sand filter system has a septic stage, which produces sludge as a waste product to be pumped out. 5. How much electricity does it use per year? Like new white-good appliances, systems should now be designed to use a lot less energy. But unfortunately, most aren’t. Ask how much the system will cost to run per annum. If it uses more than 100 watts per kilolitre treated then it is a large energy-guzzler. 6. Does it rely heavily on mechanical operation? The more pumps - the greater the risk of breakdowns. Ask about replacement costs BEFORE you buy. 7. Can you hear the system operating? Some people make their tree-change - moving away from the noise of the city - only to hear a noisy waste treatment system â€drone’ 16 hours a day. 8. Does it rely on chlorine that can deteriorate the environment? 9. Does it ever smell? Can it handle peak loadings and parties - without putting up a stink? This is when many systems tend to break down - when you least want them to. Can you take a holiday with peace of mind? 10. How resilient is it to the use of everyday household chemicals? 11. Are you getting an up-to-date waste treatment system? Check it is not a model that has been superseded by new, far more effective, energyâ€efficient technology.
