For many people travel insurance is simply seen as one of the many extras which the travel agent tries to persuade us to include in our holiday package to assist in boosting his profits and make our holiday even more expensive than it has to be. Nonetheless, there are at least 3 excellent reasons for ensuring that you do not leave home without your international travel medical insurance plan tucked safely into your pocket. First, a travel insurance policy protects you from losing your financial investment in your holiday should an emergency crop up which forces you to cancel your vacation. This is especially true when you are booking your holiday some time ahead as you cannot know what may happen in the weeks or months leading up to your trip. This said, by their very nature emergencies tend to appear at any time and without any warning and so this is one form of protection which really should not be set against any timeframe. It is natural to feel that nothing will ever happen to us however a holiday can frequently involve a significant up-front investment and the loss of these funds might mean that you cannot re-arrange your vacation at a later date. Second, a travel insurance policy permits you to pay for medical treatment both while you are in transit and while you are on holiday and, if you are unlucky enough to have a serious accident or illness, will also pay for you to return home if necessary. Medical care might be excellent at your destination and it may even be a lot cheaper than it is at home. Nonetheless, a few days in hospital may still result in a very large bill which eats deeply into your vacations spending money. It is also possible that medical care at your destination leaves a lot to be desired and you may well need to cut your trip short and head back home to get the treatment you require. Third, a travel insurance policy will protect the value of your possessions both while you are traveling and abroad so that you will receive compensation in the event of loss. If you have spent any time traveling then you will almost certainly have experienced the loss of your luggage at some time and will know just how annoying and expensive it is. I shall not forget stopping for a bite to eat on my way to the airport on one holiday and very carefully securing my suitcase out of sight in the trunk of my hire car. When I returned to the car roughly half an hour later I discovered that someone had forced the passenger door lock and folded the rear seat down to get into the boot and remove my case. I will also not soon forget waiting at a road junction one hot and sunny day in Portugal when a motorcycle pulled up alongside the car and a boy reached in through the open passenger side window and snatched my mother's purse which was lying by her feet on the floor. Traveling abroad is expensive at the best of times but heading off without suitable and adequate insurance cover can land you with bills which you simply cannot afford to pay. Accordingly, when you are making plans for a trip do not forget to add international travel medical insurance to your list.
