Over the years I have found that the same questions are asked by people who are thinking of attending an event †questions that to them may seem silly but which are very common and also important things that when answered make the idea of going speed dating that much more exciting... What type of people will I meet? A very popular question!! I think in the past speed dating has been portrayed by the media as something that only those in society who don't fit in or who come across as weird - go speed dating! On the contrary, people who go speed dating are regular people just like you and I. Honest, down to earth professionals who lead busy lives or who work unsociable hours and therefore don't always have the opportunity to go out to bars or to places where there are lots of single people. When you are in a bar and see someone you like, how do you know they are single? What happens if I approach them and they aren't? These are all questions that go through our mind and prevent us from going to over to someone to chat. Speed dating takes all that stress away as everyone who goes speed dating is single and looking to meet someone. What shall I wear? In my experience I would dress as if I were going out for a midweek drink with friends. Most speed dating companies tend to use stylish city centre bars so dress to impress †not too over the top though †a casual / smart approach works well and also makes you feel more confident and relaxed in yourself too which is so important for a night of speed dating. What happens when I arrive †how will I know what to do?!! On arrival there is an event host there to welcome you and to ensure that you feel at ease. Once you have been signed in you will then be shown over to the bar to have a drink. Just before the start of the event the hosts will then explain in full how the night will be organised †but don't worry if you miss something or don't fully understand they will then circulate to ensure everyone is OK. If you are arriving on your own, a good host will introduce you to a fellow dater so you aren't left feeling awkward before the start of the night. The hosts should look after you very well during the evening, creating a relaxed and fun environment, the best way to enjoy speed dating, but if something's not right for you just ask your hosts as they will be very keen for you to enjoy your night. Typically during the event the girls remain seated, the guys move around after every 3-4 minutes. Most organisers also have a comfort break half way through the night where you can go to the bar and get another drink. The average end time for the dating is around 10pm but there's almost always a few people staying around for another drink and some more informal chatting. What should I talk about? Anything you want! It's your night and you only have 4 minutes with each person so go for it!! In my experience people like to find out things that will help them decide whether they would be compatible or not e.g. general interests, where does the person live, job etc. It is up to you though †whatever you feel you'd like to talk about is fine. You usually find that once you start the conversation it then flows onto something else and before you know it your time is up and the next person arrives! What happens after the event? The day after an event you generally receive an email listing all the girls / guys you have been matched with together with a contact email address or mobile phone number. Don't worry if you haven't an email address then companies are happy to text you. Some speed dating companies organise it so that you log into their site the following day and tick yourself the guys or girls that you like but from what people have said this isn't always the best approach as you could find that when its left to them some people for whatever reason just don't go back onto the site to do that, so you could be left wondering what ever happened to that good looking guy/girl I got on so well with? The companies that provide you with the matching service, entering all the choices the day after the event, are better - you are likely to get more matches and therefore more dates!!
