If you're suffering from skin problems, here is a brief guide to the 4 most common ailments with darker complexions.

Acne

Acne is one of the biggest challenges to women with dark complexions who want that healthy clear glow. As a result of acne, those with darker complexions also have to worry about hyper-pigmentation. Hyper-pigmentation is the dark spots left behind after an acne outbreak that are very hard to get rid of. Many different factors contribute to the development of acne and range from heredity to diet to stress-related hormones. In many cases, acne is cause by the skin cells inability shed properly leaving pores clogged.

Eczema

Eczema is another unsightly skin problem that is seen quite a bit in darker complexions, as well as lighter complexions. However, it is said to be the most common skin disease in African-Americans. As far as signs of Eczema go, they are diverse and varied. It can range from mild itchy dry skin to severe rashes and discoloration. In darker skin, Eczema can sometimes appear dry and ashen, with brown or gray patches. It can also appear as rough, brown bumps near follicles.

Melasma

This dysfunction leads to dark brown or grayish brown spots on skin that is normally clear. It is often called the "pregnancy plague" because it commonly occurs in women 21-40 who are pregnant. Melasma has even been known to affect women who are taking an oral contraceptive.

Scars

Abnormal healing of the skin occurs frequently in individuals with brown skin and leaves unwanted marks often times raised and bubble-like. Most injuries or wounds in people with skin of color heal with normal scars, depending on the severity of the injury and how it healed. When the injury was severe or deep the scars can heal abnormally and are called keloids. Keloids differ from the typical scar in that because they overgrow the borders of the original wound and appear much larger and more noticeable.

Hyperkeratosis

Although it is painless, Hyperkeratosis is a common ailment in women with brown skin involving the thickening of the skin. It is due to excessive accumulation of keratin in the outer layers of the skin. Successful treatment of hyperkeratosis involves a use of topical creams with salicylic acid or alpha-hydroxyl acid as active ingredients.

Treatment Options

In problems such as Acne and Eczema, using products like Sulfur Soap could help shed away those layers of skin that clog the pores and cause the unwanted bumps. To treat the Melasma and some less severe Scars, skin lightening cream and bleaching cream are both ideal. For hyperkeratosis, discoloration often occurs and skin lightening creams may also be used. These products are great from fading away unwanted dark spots on the face and give the skin the healthy radiant glow that only comes from having clear skin.
