5 Tips For Delivering A Final Product Of Professional Sound

By: Gen Wright Home | Business

Mastering music is a skill that requires years of knowledge and hands-on experience. While the act has proven tedious for many who would rather just write songs, play, and sing, others have tried to handle the techniques in studio to save on costs and have more control over the final sound. Which option is best for you ultimately depends on your skill level and your dedication to the process. One thing is for certain. The mastering process is not one that you should take lightly as it can ultimately make or break the sound. While poor skills and performance are beyond hope for any mastering expert, good music has often fallen victim to poor post-production work. If you're going to try it yourself, here are some matters to keep in mind.

Embrace technology. There is a wide variety of hardware and software out there to help you digitally capture your music and process it at a sophisticated level. Most pros are making use of technology to create a finished product, and to stay competitive, so should you. That doesn't mean buying the most expensive piece of equipment or computer program that you can find. It means taking the time to learn the ins and outs of a dependable platform. That also means having a firm grasp on vocabulary and musicality.

Match levels. You will likely record 10-15 songs for an album, and each will have its own level of quality. By matching levels, that does not mean each song has to sound the same, but it does mean that you need to find the heart of each track and make it stand out minus the imperfections that can seep in to a taped performance. Again, you don't want 10-15 identical songs. But you do want songs that each bear a standard of quality and professionalism.

Compare work. Having a CD or some other form of audio reference material will give your ears a good idea of the overall sound. Make sure that you don't finalize before you have had the chance to make comparisons and tweak accordingly. You may also discover new ideas that you can incorporate into your originals.

Use headphones. Having the music close to you is important. Headphones block out peripheral noise that can compromise the listening experience. Invest in a good pair and use them to isolate the imperfections that may show up in a broader sense on the final cut.

Trust the professionals. Even when you're confident you can handle things yourself, it is generally a good idea to get a second opinion. Providers such as Billy Rock can handle the entire process for you, or they can offer valuable input to get your music where it needs to be.
