8 Label Design Tips

By: Mark Buckley Home | Business | Advertising

Labels are often responsible for a product being easily recognized and picked up by target customers at the point of purchase. A good label design, therefore, makes it possible for any product to stand out from the crowd of other similar products displayed on store shelves. So, while designing a good label, the following 10 tips can be kept in mind to create a label that helps in a product's branding and also provides necessary information, besides being attractive.

1.Purpose †It would be easier for you to design a label once you know where it'll be used. The purpose of the label will influence its designing to a great extent. A CD label will definitely have a different design than a bar code label.

2.Graphics †If your label design isn't graphically interesting, it'll have very less chances of attracting attention from a store shelf. You can use stock photographs to get a professional photograph to capture the product on camera, so as to get an appealing image for using on the label.

3.Colour †While choosing the right colour scheme for a label, consider the colour of the background, such as a CD or a bottle, on which the label will be used. You can check out various websites that can help you to work out the perfect colour combination for your label.

4.Software †Many people design their label on Microsoft Word, but when you are dealing with graphics, it's better to use a specialized software like Adobe Photoshop or similar image editing software. Using the right software will make your work a lot easier as you'll have specialized tools to modify any image or play with the text.

5.Resolution and Bit-depth †300 ppi is a good resolution for printing a label. However, 600 ppi is also a good setting if you plan to print your label on desktop or laser printers or inkjet printers. 8 bit depth with 16 million colours is suitable for label design. 16 bit images can be difficult to handle and are unnecessary for label design.

6.Templates †You can use ready-made templates available online or you can create your own templates for label design that you can use again and again or after modifications, which will save you a lot of time and money.

7.Readability †No matter how colourful or graphically beautiful the design of your label is, if people can't read it then even a nice design will go waste. If the label is going to be used as a label of a product that'll be displayed on a shelf, then the brand name should be readable at least from a distance of 6 feet.

8.Contact †Don't forget to mention your contact details on the label. At least mention a website URL and give a physical address and phone number.

If you follow the label design tips mentioned above then you'll surely develop labels that are not only attractive, but useful too.
