The birth of any baby is unquestionably an exciting time and a time to make merry but it is also usually a nervous time spent running around ensuring that you have everything you need and stressing about whether or not you will be able to cope. Naturally, this is particularly true if you are first-time parents. The idea for the baby shower came about as a time for friends and family to be together before the baby's arrival and to help relieve the financial burden on parents-to-be by giving them many of the accessories and furnishings that they will need as soon as the baby arrives. Although today the majority of people prefer to break out of the traditional mold when it comes to a baby shower, for the most part these events still stick largely to traditional guidelines. Almost certainly one of the most significant changes to the modern baby shower format is the fact that they are no longer exclusively for women and plenty of men now make it onto the baby shower guest list and are more than happy to join in. While they might not take part in all of the shower games, men do like the opportunity to give their best wishes to the expectant mother and father-to-be. You should remember though that in certain cultures a baby shower is thought to be a sign of bad luck and so, if there is a chance that the expectant parents might believe that it is unlucky, then you ought to be sure to check before holding a shower. In some countries the baby shower is in fact organized after the baby is born while it others it is organized before the birth. In many ways it makes sense to have the shower following the birth as a baby shower is after all a celebration of arrival of the new baby and guests obviously like to see the central figure of the celebration. It is also far easier to pick gender-appropriate colors and gifts and, should your gift needs to be engraved, guests will have all of the details they require. Even though having the shower after the baby's birth does make sense it is a very busy time for new parents and many of the items the parents require are required as soon as the baby arrives home. For this reason having the baby shower prior to the baby's birth is becoming a more common option. The baby shower itself is traditional and in most cases showers require the same sort of planning and activities. A guest list will need to be drawn up, a venue selected and invitations delivered out. The shower venue then needs to be decorated and drink, food and games organized. Also, as it is a very special event, you might want to consider having a magician or other performer participating in the festivities and a photographer to make a record of the day. A baby shower can evolve into a big affair with a lot of things to arrange that are going to cost a lot of money. For this reason it is advisable to draw up a budget for the event before you start and then make sure that you stick to it. Holding a memorable baby shower does not take any special talent but it does take a carefully thought out plan that includes a timeline and a budget.
