A Dream That’s Just A Few Steps Away

By: Irwin S Home | Health-and-Fitness | Dental

There was a time when replicating the natural function and appearance of your lost teeth could be very difficult to accomplish. Historically, dentures or bridge restorations would be used as replacements, but with limited results. Dental implants, however, are natural-looking replacements for missing teeth that also provide the same function as your natural tooth root. They have also been used to anchor these other types of restorations for greater success and patient satisfaction.

An dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically anchored into your jaw bone to hold a replacement tooth or denture in place. In most cases this artificial root is a titanium screw that is placed surgically in the bone. The screw then fuses biologically with the living bone (a process called osseo-integration) to form a strong foundation upon which a crown or bridge can be placed. Your implanting solution consists of two type’s classification:-

* Osseo integrated implant
* Fibro integrated implant

A typical implant consists of a titanium screw (resembling a tooth root)(this first part seems repetitive with what was said above.) with a roughened or smooth surface. Today most implants are made out of the Ti6AlV4 alloy and treated either by plasma spraying, etching or sandblasting to increase the surface area and, thus the integration potential of the implant.

Dental implants are a procedure that replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial tooth roots that look and function like real ones. Dental implant surgery can offer a welcome alternative to ill-fitting dentures or bridgework. Dental implants can be placed in patients of any age (with fully developed jawbones), provided that they have a sufficient quantity and quality of bone tissue available.

Most healthy individuals that maintain a good oral hygiene program are suitable candidates for dental implants. However, smokers and those with uncontrolled chronic diseases or systematic problems may not be good candidates for this procedure. Smoking impedes healing in the mouth and can reduce the likelihood that implants will be successful.

Although patients should always practice proper dental hygiene, this is especially true once a dental implant has been put into place. When teeth and gum's are not properly cleaned, bacteria can attack sensitive areas, causing the gum's to swell and the jawbone to gradually recede.
