The fact of the matter, is that your home and its landscaping can most likely be improved with outdoor lighting. However; there are a few things that you will want to consider before attempting to install lighting around your home. Wiring should be ran in metal conduit when it is ran outdoors. If there is a situation when it is difficult to do so then it should be strung overhead, far out of reach of people. Wire that is strung in this way should be a heavy gage wire and it can be expected to corrode over time. Always, the best way to go, is to dig a small trench and run your conduit in that and bury it. When wire is ran this way and sealed off properly you can expect trouble free service for the life of the home. Stringing even heavy gage wire along the ground fully exposed is pretty much a waste of time, because small rodents and children are drawn to them like ants to honey. If your home is finished and landscaped then you may be somewhat limited as to the extent that you can install outdoor lighting, unless of course you are willing to tear up your yard and landscaping. The best thing to do in this case is to walk around the perimeter of your home and look for places on the home itself that you can mount your lights. Fascia boards are a great place, because you can easily run the wiring in the attic and then out three of four feet to the light. Another option is to install larger lights to cover a broad area, instead of multiple smaller lights. If you are determined to go with multiple smaller lights however, you can use small solar powered lights but they tend to not provide a lot of actual lighting.
