A Look At Veneers, Bonding, And Crowns

Improving the appearance of your smile is a lot more than just wanting to look younger. It's also an investment in your confidence and ultimately, your overall health. Whether you're teeth are stained, crooked, chipped, or misshaped, there is a dental procedure for you and your specific case.

The following three dental options are effective methods for bringing you the beautiful smile and improved oral health that you deserve. Ask your doctor if Veneers, Crowns or Bonding would be right for you.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding, also known as tooth or composite bonding, repairs discolored or cracked teeth, corrects misaligned teeth, and replaces silver amalgam fillings. This procedure is painless and can usually be completed in one visit, depending on the extent of the damage.

The procedure consists of applying a resin material to the effected tooth's surface. Your dentist will sculpt, harden and polish the tooth to its ideal shape and color, resulting in a new and improved smile. Bonding is most suitable for small restorations as it is more susceptible to staining or chipping, but is sufficient for filling small cavities or broken surfaces.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are one of the more invasive options offered by dentists to repair damaged teeth. Generally made from thin pieces of porcelain because of its durability and similarity to your natural teeth, veneers are applied tooth by tooth and usually require three visits.

The treatments consist of removing a layer of enamel from the tooth and applying temporary enamel while the porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory. Once your veneers are ready, you will visit your dentist again for the permanent application. Veneers are ideal for masking undesirable defects and covering discolored fillings. Plus, they last longer than most other cosmetic dentistry procedures and are highly resistant to permanent staining.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are designed to cap severely damaged or decayed teeth. They add strength to the effected tooth, saving those that might otherwise have been extracted. Preparing the tooth for a crown involves reshaping the tooth to fit the crown. Your dentist will then make an impression of the effected teeth and gums and send it to a laboratory for the crown fabrication. A temporary crown will be placed on your tooth until your permanent crown is ready. At the following appointment your dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent crown onto the tooth.

Numerous procedures and treatments are available to improve the quality of your smile. Visit your dentist to assess the best treatment plan for you. Investing in the perfect smile can have more far-reaching effects than just attractive teeth- it can have a significant impact on your overall health. It's an investment you won't regret.
