A National Park Of Great Beauty

By: Douglas Scott Home |

Ko Samet is a small island in Rayong Province, within easy reach of Bangkok. And is a national park of great natural beauty in the Rayong province. It is located about seven kilometres from main land. Samet Island has taken its name from the local tree species commonly found on the island called Samet both red and white species.

Ko Samet gets less rain fall than Rayong Province, even though it is only a few km offshore. Round the clock electricity is now available in most resorts on the island.

In the 1970's Ko Samet was discovered by Thai teenagers and young couples seeking a week end retreat from life in Bangkok. In spite of its protected status as part of the Khao Laem Ya - Samet National Marine Park the island has developed into a resort loved by both Thais and foreigners.

Ko Samet also spelled Koh Samet is a small island and you will find some of the most beautiful beaches. The best well-known beaches on Samet are Ao Wai, Ao Phai, Hat Sai Kaew, Ao Vong Duan, Ao Kui and Na Nok on the East coast and Ao Prao on the West coast. Many of these beaches has sand that is so white and fine. There are many really nice resorts and cosy bungalows on most of Koh Samet's beaches. The water is also very clear.

Hat Sai Kaew or Diamond beach is the most popular and longest one of the beaches on Ko Samet. It is located in the North-East and it is about 780 meters long. This is the beach You should choose if you like to have a little people and activities around you. The sand is almost snow-white and the water is invitingly green-blue.

If you are relaxing on the beach during the day there are plenty of hawkers selling BBQ chicken wings, fresh fruit, papaya salad, dried squid, and even ice creams at reasonable prices.

There are two methods to get around the island. The first is by songthaew, this is just a pick up truck with the passengers sitting in the back. The second way is by renting a motorcycle.

Nightlife on Koh Samet finishes at about 2am, with taxis stopping by 3am

The area in the middle of the island is hilly so the people settle in the plain near the coast and most villagers live in the east and the north of the island.
