A Short Wool Rug History

By: Rick Martin Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

A wool rug is often the ideal area rug for one's home due to its multiple qualities, both physical and aesthetical. Apart from the warm and cozy touch, which it can bring to one's home, wool rugs are resistant and easy to maintain and are ideal for places where a lot of activity takes place, such as hallways, the living room or perhaps the children's play rooms. Next, we will learn about wool and its qualities and about wool rugs and their benefits.

A short history of wool will reveal the fact that wool has a good renown because of its many qualities, among which fiber finesse, scale structure, cleanliness and damage resistance range as the most important. It has been around for a very long time, since the widespread domestication of sheep and goats. The oldest wool fiber textile in Europe dates back to 1500 BCE. In Roman time Europe, wool along with linen and leather provided most peoples' clothing, as Indian cotton was an extravagance. Therefore, a selective breeding of animals had begun, creating specifically cared-for sheep that provided superior fleece.

During medieval times, the wool trade turned into serious business and divided into sub-trades: wool rug manufacturing, woolen cloth manufacturing and so on. Many countries (for example Central Italian ones) were financially revolving around this growing industry. Many of them (and, in fact, many of the European woolen textiles manufacturers) relied on British wool exports, which were of great financial importance to both the provider (Britain) and the entrepreneurs in the field, in need of this valuable raw material.

As centuries passed, wool demand and profits kept growing, but contemporary times have lead to a decrease in wool demand and wool rug production, along with the apparition of synthetic fibers, commonly and easily used for creating more stylish and decorative types of rugs and clothing. The downfall of the price of wool began in 1966, with a nearly 40% drop, a considerable diminution that lead to the breeders' orientation to producing more of other commodities, such as meat.

Nevertheless, even today, a woolen area rug always receives positive appreciation, frequently viewed as superior to any usual stylish or decorative rug. It brings warmth to the room where people choose to place it and is resistant and easy to clean. The wool fibers hardly retain any soil, so they are ideal for places with intense activity, such as hallways, the living room or even children's play rooms.

Besides its practical qualities, a wool rug is always a great decorative element for rooms, as it may come in many designs, from oriental or popular themes to modern and fashionable ones. Contemporary manufacturing of wool rugs is an activity that takes place all around the world. You can find it in countries like the US (where machines are the most frequent producers"), China, India, or Belgium. You can identify manufacturing centers in Bulgaria, Romania and many other countries.

Handcrafting is the preferred approach for the creation of quality wool rugs. Knotted or tufted, they manage to bring a more human and personal touch to each item. In addition, everyone prefers objects with personality and their own story instead of ordinary things available at any corner of a street for a certain amount of money.
