By: Douglas Scott Home |

Sorrento is a small city in Campania, Italy and a popular tourist destination. The town overlooks the bay of Naples a harbour with ferry departures to Capri, Amalfi and Naples, Land of Mermaids. Land of Orange and Lemon Groves. Land of Colours.

Sorrento hosts important events in the fields of culture, music, cinema, as well as the ideal starting point for visiting to all the tourist sights of the area.

The tourist focal point is Piazza Tasso, where tables and chairs crowd the central square which is built over a gorge. The old town is full of character with a wealth of restaurants and bars and the main street is lined with elegant boutiques. The town of Sorrento is most famed for its spaghetti dishes.

Most places in the city are very expensive. Piazza Tasso is the main street of Sorrento. Every week on Tuesdays there is a street market where you can buy all sorts of goods from clothing to jewellery. Sorrento is known especially for in laid wood carvings and boxes as well as cameo jewellery.

There are no beach in the town at all. There are a few sun bathing decks at the bottom of the cliffs.

The late night bars are in Vespas area.

The main local product is the Limoncello di Sorrento. It is a liquor made from lemons that are grown on the rich soil of the Sorrentine peninsula. The combination of the extremely mild micro-climate, the sun, the sea, and the volcanic soil results in the best lemons of the world. It is from these lemons, that are biologically cultivated, that the famous limoncello is made. Limoncello is a very natural liquor that consists of sugar, lemons, alcohol and water. Limoncello should be served very cold, preferably in a pre-cooled glass.

The Church and Cloister of Saint Francesco is the origin of the monastery dates back to the first half of the eighth century. The cloisters architecture shows crossed tuff arches on two sides of the portico, stylistic expression of the late fourteenth century, replaced on the other two sides by round arches on octagonal pilasters.

Basilica di San Antonino was built around the 10th century in honour of Saint Anthony, patron saint of navigators. It was splendidly restored in the 17th century by the Theatine Fathers. The crypt holds the tomb of Saint Anthony, where thousands of votive offerings have been made by sailors. In the 1300 century it became the home of the Confraternita dei Battenti.
