A Solitary Stone Shrouded In Mystery

By: Dominic Donaldson Home |

How do you start your search a perfect Diamond solitaire? Diamonds have so much myth and superstition surrounding them, legends of back luck and death, yet the primary stone chosen for wedding and engagement rings. Do people actually take interest in the Karma of this precious stone or are they more interested in the ways that a diamond jeweller would class a Diamond?

A diamond comes from the earth, its raw state being delicate and beautiful, yet strong, stronger than any other gemstone, it cannot be destroyed by earth, fire or water and can be used to cut any other precious stone, which is why it symbolises strength and longevity as a wedding stone, yet there is a more sinister side to the diamond if you believe in superstition, It is said that only a six sided diamond will reward to wearer with good karma and protection, however a flawed diamond will bring bad karma to a relationship, a diamond can express whether it is a good or bad Diamond and bring to a marriage either the good or bad qualities it possessed in its natural state. I firmly believe there is some truth in this. Diamond dust centuries ago was believed to be deadly poison, fatal to anyone who was unfortunate enough to ingest it, it would crack the teeth of those who bit it and cut the intestines of those who swallowed, this as we know nowadays is a myth as diamonds have been swallowed by diamond smugglers for centuries, the only way the smugglers fate was met was if he were killed to obtain the diamond, not through ingesting it.

Diamond jewellers these days have precise specifications for selecting and categorising Diamonds, although a more sterile approach and definitely loosing the romance and myth surrounding the superstitions, the method involves the four Cs, Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat.

The cut of a diamond would be better described as the shape of the Diamond, the most popular being the Brilliant cut, the brilliant is a round Diamond we still reigns as favourite especially when choosing for an engagement ring, making the perfect Diamond Solitaire. There are many other shape including the princess, rose, Swiss, oval and more.

The second C covers the clarity of the stone, clarity is often referred to ask the purity of the stone or the quality, therefore this is the C which most effects the price of solitaire, the clarity is graded on how pure the diamond is and whether it has imperfections such as natural flaws, cracks or defects which hinder the shine and light which go through the diamond.

The third is the Colour, most people truly believe that white Diamonds are the best as this is reflected in the price, however diamonds come in many natural tints including yellow, green, grey and brown, all can be very attractive and pleasing to the eye, a white diamond is also known as a colourless diamond and means precisely that.

The fourth and final C is the Carat; carat is the weight of a Diamond which is based on one carat being equal the one fifth of a gram in metric terms. The bigger the stone the higher the carat which doesnt necessarily mean that bigger is better. Although having said that larger sized Diamonds are more of a rarity and therefore perhaps more precious. All the four Cs combined actually can result in the perfect diamond solitaire to suit taste, style and budget but to me its all a very clinical way of choosing something which is meant to be so personal.
