A Tale Of Two Cities Broadway - Musical Epic On Broadway

By: Al Terry Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

A Tale Of Two Cities Broadway is a show that has been in development for a long time. It has been in gestation for nearly nine years with workshops, backers’ presentations, a studio cast recording and so on.

Finally, the musical had an opening last year at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Florida. Now the musical finally finds itself entering the hallowed gates of Broadway with much of the same cast as in Florida. Two days after Bastille Day, the cast and crew of A Tale of Two Cities Broadway finally allowed the press a sneak preview of the inner mechanisms of the first Broadway opening of the fall. After having had many false starts and several missed opening dates, the cast and crew of A Tale of Two Cities seemed only too eager to prove themselves and the show as a worthy adaptation of a literary work of art.

The Press Preview Event For A Tale Of Two Cities

At the preview event held for the press, a three song musical presentation by the thirty eight member cast conducted by musical director Kevin Stites, heralded the beginning. The crew, seemed determined to redeem themselves from â€garage band musical status’ as described by a cast member, Nick Wyman.

The powerhouse singer of A Tale of Two Cities Broadway, Natalie Toro, was highly impressive in her vocal, â€It Won’t Be Long’. The musical score seemed more or less up to the ample expectations with touching ballads and rousing anthems that were presented commendably by the cast. A Tale Of Two Cities seems reminiscent of the megamusicals like Phantom Of The Opera and Les Miserables with its attention to historical detail and grandiose sets. However, the question still remains whether such big budget shows can count on these grand sets and classic themes to win over Broadway audiences as in the earlier days.

The Setting And Story Of A Tale Of Two Cities

A Tale Of Two Cities Broadway is set in Paris and London during the gripping era of the French Revolution. This historical musical about a family separated by the Revolution attempts to bring back the era of the epics of yore such as Les Miserables. A story of vengeance, injustice and love, A Tale Of Two Cities is one of the most fascinating love stories ever told.

Dr. Manette has to be brought back from the brink of insanity with the help of his daughter, Lucie, when he is released from the French Bastille after seventeen years of imprisonment. While in England, the two come across two men who change their lives forever. Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat who marries Lucie and Sydney Carton, a drunken cynic. Facing the guillotine in this historical epic, Carton is one part of the love triangle formed between himself, Lucie and Darnay. Political circumstances and family obligations bring Lucie and her family back to Paris and it is here that Carton proves himself to be an unlikely hero at the height of the Reign of Terror.
