Between late August and Mid November Western Australia’s wild flowers are blooming. Using natural elements as a base for design is an age old formula. The key is balancing colour pattern and texture, while maintaining a sense of conservatism; this is the art of design. But like all industries it is lost without the intervention of science, being the formation of concepts and, the dying, weaving and manufacturing processes. No matter where in the world you are, the impact of nature in fashion design is predominated only by art, the first creation. On display this floral tie, non seasonal and available no matter where in the world you are a brilliant combination of colour pattern and texture, manufactured by science. Choose any front on men’s grooming, from cosmetics to cufflinks and you will find at the root, bio-chemists and analysts synthetically extracting dyes and improving weaving and manufacturing techniques, making fashion and accessories more affordable for the average man. The choices are enviable. After you’ve knotted your favourite tie and clipped cufflinks to cuff, splash on some Boss after shave to last the whole day even in searing heat. And that’s not all, for further decoration, a pocket square or even lapel badges all go toward bringing a collection of clothes together in formation of style; your own style. There are no specific benchmarks; it’s basically what ever takes your fancy, according to mood, climate and budget. Some notable brands on the escalator will help you achieve the end result. One example is London based designer Ian Flaherty. He has crossed the Atlantic and the Indian Pacific as far and wide as Australia and Japan. His best selling cufflink: the Cube. He popularised the use of Swarovski Crystals, his claim to success, is an unswerving adherence to style creation, which as seen him clear many dips and dives commonly known in fashion. To single out one name would be unfair, because there are many lesser known brands that are equal in quality and bigger on style than some globally popular names. The current economic climate will no doubt have a great positive impact on style, because those who are low on budget, but have the time, inclination and skill will make their own clothes. And by doing so, create new styles for the future. It’s becomes a complex cycle, as natural, social economic and political influences collide. All the examples are recorded, not just in history books, but for all to see in the clothes we wear. And the impact of Hollywood: 1971: Maverick screen actress Katherine Hepburn, whose long-term lover Spencer Tracey was a customer of Huntsman, takes the extraordinary step of ordering bespoke denim jeans from her late lover's Savile Row tailor. Hepburn's commission foreshadows bespoke denim collections launched in 2006 by Timothy Everest and Evisu. 1973: Robert Redford stars in the definitive film of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald was a dedicated customer of Jermyn Street bespoke shirt maker Turnbull & Asser. The shirts that reduce The Great Gatsby's socialite heroine Daisy (Mia Farrow) to tears with their beauty in the film all bear the Turnbull & Asser bespoke label.
