If your Abbotsford dentist recommends that your child have braces, the first thing you'll probably think of is the silver braces we wore growing up. Silver braces are an orthodontic treatment that has been used by Abbotsford dentists and Abbotsford orthodontists for decades for the simple reason that they work! They're an effective way of straightening teeth that are misaligned or where teeth don’t line up properly on the upper and lower jaws. When explaining about silver braces, your Abbotsford children’s dentist will tell you that this type of orhtodontic treatment, also known as wire braces are flexible wire appliances designed to move your tooth root in the desired direction. Their biggest downside is that they’re quite visible because of the silver color. They’re strong, durable and effective. Most silver braces these days are made from a nickel titanium alloy. If you want something a little less obtrusive, you may opt for ‘clear’ braces or porcelain braces which are tooth colored, other than the wire itself. Clear braces are a bit larger than the silver braces. However, the tooth color does much to make them less noticeable. Clear braces are made from a glass like composite material and are resistant to stains when properly cared for. Treatment with porcelain braces is slower than with the silver braces. Sometimes your orthodontist may recommend porcelain braces for the upper teeth and silver for the lower. Mouth guards should be worn when playing sports, especially when wearing porcelain braces Whichever type of braces you opt for, they will need to be adjusted frequently – every 4 to 6 weeks. At each visit, the dentist or orthodontist may change the elastic wire holding the spring wire in place as this tends to wear quite quickly. If you would like to adjust your teeth for a more attractive smile, you’ll want to check out the various options which are available to you. The best thing to do is to visit your dentist or orthodontist and let them do an examination to determine the best treatment for your situation. You may find that your situation may be suitable for Invisalign which performs a similar function to braces only it is a clear, plastic tray which is worn and it doesn’t have any wires. Adjustments are made through wearing a series of trays over time. It’s a very popular choice, especially for adults these days. Watch our video titled, “What is invisalign” for more details on this.
