Acne Laser Skin Treatment - Some Things To Consider

By: Tony James Home |

One of the most popular and dermatologist recommended procedures today for severe and chronic acne, as well as acne scarring, is acne laser skin treatment. This is especially true in cases where traditional treatments and medications have failed to bring about satisfactory improvement.

In addition to its popularity, however, acne scar laser treatment is also one of the most expensive treatments available today. With each treatment costing several hundred dollars, and with many patients requiring multiple treatments before satisfactory results are obtained, it is important that acne sufferers weigh carefully the advantages and disadvantages of all their treatment options before deciding which one is best for them.

Laser acne treatments are a popular form of treatment particularly for the many people who have acne scars. There are two main approaches to acne laser skin treatment: ablative and non-ablative. In a procedure known as laser resurfacing, ablative lasers resurface the skin by actually burning away or vaporizing the upper layers of the skin where the acne scars are located. This greatly reduces, and in some cases eliminates altogether, the appearance of the scars.

Non ablative laser treatments are less aggressive in terms of their severity and less invasive than ablative treatments and are used for the more delicate procedures necessary to treat skin under the eyes, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as more superficial kinds of acne scars. The non-ablative procedures are also quicker, have less painful side effects, and require far less recovery time than the six to eight weeks sometimes required by the ablative method.

The following advice may be helpful when you are considering which acne laser skin treatment, if any, is right for you. First of all, talk to your dermatologist about the pros and cons of the different laser acne treatments. He or she will help you choose the treatment option that is best for your specific case and that will have the least amount of impact with regards to pain, discomfort and side effects.

Secondly, don't depend upon your doctor's opinion alone. Yes, he is the expert, but it's your face and you need to do some research on your own and learn as much as you can about what's available to you and for you. There's a wealth of material available on the internet to help you do this.

Read up on the various procedures. Learn what you can realistically expect in terms of recovery time and side effects and prepare ahead of time for them. Then talk to you doctor again and ask him to answer any additional questions you might have.

Thirdly, talk to others who have had the different treatments and let them tell you about their experiences. Are their experiences consistent with your doctor's opinion, or are they telling you something different? The most important thing in the end is that you be comfortable with your decision.
