Adult Braces: Hope For The young Once

By: Clint Jhonson Home | Health-and-Fitness | Dental

Teeth overlaps, gaps, rotated teeth and crowding - these are just some of the many causes of the imperfect smile that you have had for most of your life. Fortunately today, you can opt for adult braces to get the straight teeth and perfect smile you have always wanted.

What are braces? Braces are mainly metal (steel), ceramic or plastic devices which are designed to put pressure on your teeth allowing them to shift into a position that is more desirable. Adult braces allow your teeth to be aligned giving you a set of straight teeth. Not only that, braces are able to correct malocclusion, also known as bad bites. Most braces are attached to the front of the teeth and put together through wires. These wires are properly shaped and designed into a ideal position, then threaded with metal brackets. They put pressure on your teeth to allow it to conform to the right shape for the straight teeth that you want.

Once applied, your orthodontist will most likely need to re-adjust your adult braces by tightening the wires every four to six weeks. As time goes on, you should expect your teeth to straighten and conform gradually. In about two years, you will see the straight teeth and beautiful smile you have always dreamed of. However, to make sure your teeth do not go back to the original shape, your orthodontist may prescribe retainers for a few more months.

While orthodontic treatment is usually sought by teenagers, one can never be "too old" to consider braces. In today's appearance-conscious world, it is no wonder more and more adults are opting for braces. Some people who have lived with crowded, crooked teeth or bad bites for decades decide on getting their teeth fixed through adult braces. This is mainly because straight teeth don’t only improve their general health but, improve the function of the teeth, as well.

Adult braces may be a little more complicated than those for teenagers. Some may require special treatments. This does not mean a beautiful smile is unattainable, it simply means that you may need some other special treatment. Remember, adult jaw growth has already stopped so, adults may sometimes need jaw surgery. Also, bone and gum loss can interfere with the orthodontic process and you may need to see an oral surgeon or periodontist. Bone loss limits tooth movement so, the in some cases, a bone graft may be necessary. Another problem that may be faced with attaching adult braces is that missing or damaged teeth may interfere with the treatment. The absentee teeth may have to be replaced and the damaged ones removed.

Though adult braces prove to be more challenging than teen braces, it certainly does not mean that you can’t get the straight teeth that you want.
