Adults And Braces

Adults And Braces

Think you're too old for braces? Think again. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, a growing number of adults fit braces into their lifestyle, and one in five orthodontic patients is an adult. Cosmetic dentistry is booming, and there are numerous orthodontic treatments available to correct your teeth and enhance your smile.

Whether you're looking to straighten your teeth, correct your bite or improve your overall appearance, always check with your orthodontist first to discuss the best orthodontic option for your teeth.

Things To Consider Before Getting Braces

Braces can be a big investment, so before you spend the time and money, you'll want to make sure that braces are the best method for straightening and correcting your smile. Be realistic about your own expectations. Are you prepared to wear and care for your braces for the next several months? What are your desired results?

Considering the outcome and remaining open to different options will help you make the best decision regarding braces and the correction of your teeth.

Traditional Braces

Traditional, metal braces are the most common type of braces and are made of high-grade stainless steel. These conventional braces are attached to the front of your teeth and are periodically adjusted in order to apply pressure to your teeth in such a way that they move into the proper position.

Clear ceramic braces may be a more aesthetically pleasing option if you dislike the appearance of steel braces. Ceramic braces are worn on the front of your teeth just like the steel braces, but match the natural color of your teeth. The appearance may be less noticeable, but ceramic braces tend to break more easily than the metal braces. Broken braces will result in more appointments, lengthening the time of your orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment has become increasingly popular among adults as an alternative to traditional wire braces. These clear, removable aligners are a great option for adults who are opposed to noticeable steel braces. The treatment consists of a series of custom-made trays that are switched out about every two weeks, gradually shifting your teeth into place.

Not everyone can wear Invisalign, however. If you're teeth are severely crowded or crooked, the Invisalign trays may not be as effective as the traditional wire braces. Talk with an orthodontist to see if you would be a good candidate for the Invisalign treatment.

Whether you choose the traditional steel braces or the new Invisalign treatment, braces are an effective way to correct teeth and can provide adults the same benefits that children receive from an orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will need to assess your current oral health to determine whether or not you are an ideal candidate for braces. But don't let age be a deterrent to correcting your teeth. It's never too late to improve your dental health and achieve a radiant smile.
