Affordable Dental Care - Some Simple Steps Everyone Can Follow

By: Gen Wright Home | Health-and-Fitness

Everyone wants healthy teeth and gums. White teeth and an attractive smile improves one's self-esteem. Not only that, but recent medical research shows that good oral hygiene is a key factor in good overall health. Conversely, dental problems such as gum disease have been shown to increase one's risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and more.

The number one reason people fail to address oral health problems is cost. Modern dentistry can be very expensive. Yet affordable dental care is possible, just by following a few simple steps.

1. Make Good Dental Hygiene A Daily Habit

The first step in making affordable dental care a reality is prevention. Many dental problems can be prevented by practicing proper oral hygiene at home.

Brush your teeth in the morning and again at night. If possible, brush after every meal. Learn to brush your teeth correctly, in a light circular motion. Toothbrushes wear out, so when the bristles appear worn, replace with a new one. Typically a toothbrush will last about three months and are very inexpensive, so consider buying several at a time. In this way, you'll always have a new one available at the first sign of wear.

Floss daily. Proper flossing takes time, so this is easier said than done. Therefore, take steps to make flossing more convenient. For example, keep floss picks around the house, near where you relax to watch TV or read. Dentists will tell you that floss picks are not as effective as standard string floss, but they are easy to use and they may help to make daily flossing a habit. Oral irrigation devices such as water picks have also been shown to be effective.

Eat right. Avoid sugar and be aware of foods that help your teeth. Such foods are high in calcium, vitamins C and vitamin D. Fresh green vegetables provide high concentrations of nutrients that are good for your entire body, including your teeth.

2. Get Regular Preventative Care

Even when you brush and floss daily, tartar will still build-up on your teeth over time. Go to the dentist twice a year for exam and professional cleanings. This will routinely remove the build-up of tartar around your teeth and gums. Regular visits to the dentist also make it possible to catch dental problems early, when they are much less costly to treat.

3. Lower the cost of regular dental visits with a discount dental plan.

Careington Dental Plan is one of the oldest and largest dental plans in America, and a good choice for most people. Careington offers savings on virtually all dental services, including preventative dental care. Plan members can save up 60% off of a dentist's regular fees.

In Conclusion:

Good oral health is a key component of good overall health. Make brushing your teeth and flossing a daily habit. Go to the dentist twice a year for exams and cleanings. Address dental problems early, when they are easy and affordable to treat. A good discount dental plan such as Careington can reduce the cost of dental care by 30% to 50% or more. This along with good oral hygiene habits can make affordable dental care a reality for nearly all Americans.
