African American Wigs What Type Should You Choose?

By: Clint Jhonson Home | Shopping-and-Products | Fashion-Style

As there are cheap wigs and extremely expensive ones on the market when it comes to buying african american wigs, there are some things you should know. Most of these things apply to all types of wigs, so this is useful information for anyone who is thinking of getting a wig.

First you need to choose the type of wig there are synthetic ones and natural ones. If you are looking for cheap wigs, go for synthetic; they usually cost less than $100 and they are virtually indistinguishable from human hair. They are easy to care for and can maintain texture, volume and curl. However, you should not attempt to change their color or perm them as blow dryers and curling irons can severely damage them. Human hair wigs are made from natural hair and long ones typically start from $200. They need more care then synthetic ones, but they can be styled just like real hair.

When it comes to sizes, average wigs fit heads from 21.5" to 22.5" that is about 95 % of all customers. Depending on the shop you buy your wig from they will provide you with instructions on how to measure your head size. Wigs are to be worn on one's natural hairline, approximately four fingers above the eyebrows, with the back of the wig pulled down to the natural hairline in the back. All african american wigs have elastic tabs in the back so you can adjust your wig for a secure, comfortable fit. Some hairpieces also have small tabs in front of the ears that can be adjusted to hold the wig close to the face.

Both expensive and cheap wigs usually come with extra hair (up to 30% more) that can be trimmed and customized by professional stylists. Certain wigs only need minimal thinning, while others require important shaping. It is important for a wig to be professionally styled on your head this way it will suit your face and allow you to wear it more successfully.

Wig maintenance is not very expensive; it just requires a little bit of time and effort. When they are not in use, wigs should be stored on wig stands or on mannequins in order to maintain their shape. You will need to clean it regularly; the frequency of cleaning greatly depends on your lifestyle, your amount of perspiration, and environment. However, it is generally recommended that wigs are cleaned after 2 weeks of wearing, or less when it comes to african american wigs. Cleaning should be done accordingly to the instructions that come with each wig.

Synthetic wigs should be cleaned with only shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays and other styling accessories designed specifically for synthetic hair or synthetic/human (blended) hair wigs. Shampooing and conditioning should be followed by thoroughly rinsing the wig in cool water. Drying is to be done only with a soft towel. Be careful to blot dry instead of scrubbing. Finally allow the wig to dry overnight on a wig stand on mannequin.

Human hair should also be cleaned with special products as it has been processed several times and can easily damage. You can use high quality shampoos formulated for processed hair but it is preferable to use products made for wigs in order to protect your investment.
