African Safari Holidays - The Romance Of The African Safari

By: Michiel Van Kets Home | Home-and-Family | Holidays

African wildlife safari - the very phrase hints at long sunny days spent admiring fantastic wildlife in one of the most world's most exotic areas. And what could be more romantic that sitting under the stars studding the vast African sky listening to the sounds of the tropic night and anticipating the pleasures of the next day's safari to view and photograph lion, giraffe, oryx, zebra, and wildebeest?

In taking an African safari you join a long tradition of select explorers who have reached beyond the mundane for the experience of a lifetime that only a few intrepid souls can realize.

Such literary luminaries as Ernest Hemingway and Karen Blixen found inspiration in Africa's vast teeming natural landscape. The raw beauty and energy of the flora and fauna touched something in them and drew them back again and again.

Things have scarcely changed since those days. And today you can follow in their footsteps on an African safari that is also the holiday of a lifetime.

Here's a look at a typical African safari in the home of safari - Kenya. In the morning you drive in comfort from capital Nairobi to a game reserve. En route, you stop at the Equator for a rare photo opportunity and then take lunch at a safari lodge on the banks of a broad scenic River. The afternoon is reserved for game viewing. You spend the night at the game reserve enjoying dinner and drinks and the magic of the African nights.

Awakening the next day to the sounds and smells of Africa, you set off to re-explore the charms of the game reserve and perhaps head for the Mount Kenya forest. Spend the day enjoying the flora and fauna of the forest and at night can enjoy the night sounds and sights from the comfort of your room.

The next day you sample afternoon game watching and marvel at the timeless African spectacle of herds of wildebeest and zebra sweeping across the grasslands.

This is just one short itinerary out of the many African safari holidays on offer. There are many different packages available and you're sure to find on that suits your budget and timeframe.

The landscapes, sights, sounds and smells of Africa might not have changed since the time of Hemingway but one thing has - the conditions. The comfort and convenience of a modern safari are on a par with a vacation in any country in the world, but with the added magic and romance of being in Africa. Accommodation ranges from makeshift fly camps to the most luxurious of lodges and transport is in comfortable SUVs. Flying safaris are also available.

So if you've decided an African safari is for you, you need to choose how to arrange things. It's best to put your whole vacation plan in the hands of an experienced operator that knows the country and is committed to ecotourism and culturally friendly travel. In that way, you'll be helping the country as well as having the experience of a lifetime.

For the first time visitor to Africa, the package safari is the best choice as everything is organized for you. This includes luxurious game lodge or camp accommodation, together with all meals and transportation. An important factor is having a knowledgeable and experienced guide who can introduce you to all the wonders that Africa has to offer.

On the subject of romance, some intrepid souls even choose to get married while of Safari. What could trump a wedding ceremony so close to nature and a honeymoon in one of the most romantic spots in the world?

For maximum enjoyment and flexibility, choose a company that can tailor your African safari to suit your needs. In this way you'll get the personal touch and an itinerary perfectly suited for your needs and interests.

So the choice is yours. Choose the wonder or romance of an African safari or just go back to your regular everyday beach resort. And if you choose Africa, remember that safari was born in Kenya - a land of vast, sprawling plains, snowcapped mountains, glittering lakes and fabulous beaches.
