All About Oprah Winfrey - Talk Show Goddess

By: Jacob Getty Home | Arts-and-Entertainment | Movies-TV

Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in 1954 on the 29th of January. Nowadays she is known for her very successful infotainment talk show ' The Oprah Winfrey Show'. This talk show is the most successful talk show ever in American TV history.

Oprah Winfrey is one of the most well-paid talk show hosts there is. She pulls in a whopping $225,000,000 each and every year. But hosting a popular talk show isn't the only way she makes her money. She has also recently added a weekly XM Satellite Radio show as well as a syndicated daily talk show with Rachel Ray.

Oprah is also well known for her charitable acts. Last year Oprah built a new school in Africa for girls, a $40,000,000 school called the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.

The Oprah Winfrey show has won many Emmy Awards as a result of the hard work that Oprah has put in since the start of her television career. One of the reasons why Oprah is so loved by millions of people (especially women) all over the world is her very public struggle with personal issues such as obesity. Throughout the years people watching her TV show have been able to accompany Oprah when she tried a new diet, started exercising and when she happily announced her successful weight loss. Being a pioneer when it comes to connecting weight issues to emotional overeating she has been an eye opener to many people.

Oprah is known for more things that just for being a talk show host, presenter and producer. She has played parts in film (the most memorable one being 'The Color Purple') and has won an Academy Award for her acting skills. Oprah also publishes her own magazine (the successful 'O') and is considered to be the most philanthropic African American of all times.

At 17 Oprah started her career in radio and television working at a radio station in her area of Tennessee. According to her grandmother Oprah occupied herself with other games and toys than regular children. She would spend her time interviewing her dolls and the crows sitting on the fences near her home. She is a perfect example of someone who managed to work her way up from a very poor background living with a mother on welfare. Oprah says that this background made her the successful woman that she is today.
