America's Next Top Model: The Tyra-model Connection Controversy

By: Groshan Fabiola Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

Let's face it: we don't like predictable TV shows, much more predictable reality shows. That has been the case for America 's Next Top Model, as the show has gotten pretty boring in the last three cycles. In fact, the trend is about to continue through next month, as we welcome a new cycle.

You can blame it on Tyra Banks. She's the one who decides who to put in the competition and who to send home. Lately, all the ever recruits are wannabe models whom she has previously known in one way or another. ANTM fans aren't a fan base to be fooled with, and they see right through this act. In fact, they don't like it when predictable models emerge successful in the reality competition. Let's take a look at the previous cycles and see the commonalities between them.

Cycle 7 had Jaslene Gonzalez, who was a contestant on the season that CariDee English won. Jaslene was surprisingly eliminated in the first episode, after making it into the semi-final round. This was all an oddity to the fans, especially after seeing more of Jaslene's talents in cycle 8, in which she emerged triumphant. Fans let this incident pass, thinking it was a coincidence. However, come cycle 9, they started thinking twice. Cycle 9 had Saleisha Stowers win the whole thing, and thus remained to be above all the girls. However, we did find out that she did attend T-Zone, Tyra Banks' very own self-esteem camp for young girls. In the first episode, Tyra admitted that she knew Saleisha. Saleisha, on the other hand, downplayed her relationship with Tyra, saying that the camp she attended had nothing to do with modeling. However, Saleisha soon appeared on Tyra's talk show as a model for current Project Runway contestant Rami Kashou's fashion line. Maybe that was a bad move?

Cycle 10 is just around the corner and another returnee is found among the contestants. Marvita, a previous contestant hoping for a second chance, is among the hopefuls and fans are disappointed to see that Tyra is really indeed maneuvering the supposedly reality show. Maybe it's time that the producers think twice about handing everything over to Tyra, as the quality of the show may be compromised. There will be no more reality when Tyra ends up picking whoever she wants to win in the end.
