An Insight On Patient Care Technician Program

Today a patient care technician is one of the most demanding professions in the health care industry. In fact, it is one of the leading career options that play a vital role in the delivery of proper health care to various patients. As a patient care technician, you will be a well-respected professional and often have more patient contact than any other team member including doctors and nurses. You will assist patients with tasks that they cannot do for themselves, such as bathing, brushing their teeth or dressing. Besides this, some additional responsibilities may even include performing range of motion exercises and helping the patient move from place to place.

You may require setting up equipment for patient treatments or even support with community outings. The major benefit of choosing this profession is that it even opens the door to a wide variety of great opportunities. As a patient care technician or assistant, you might choose to work in a public or private hospital, nursing home, home healthcare agency or even long-term care facility. Apart from this, if we look at the present employment outlook for patient care technician, it is definitely better than the other career options. As per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, positions for patient care assistants are expected to grow faster than average between 2006 and 2016. So, if you wish to advance your career in this profession, earning a nursing degree is a major necessity.

These days, many nursing colleges, universities and health centers offer patient care assistant technician program. The program help you learn about the daily activities that occur in medical facilities. The program trains you become more familiar with the duties of health care technicians. During this program, you will discover how patient care technicians interact with healthcare professionals. You generally explore the various work settings and types of patients that you may encounter and require to examine. In addition to this, once you complete this program, you will also be able to check vital signs, CPR and First Aid, assist in performing electrocardiograms (EKGs), basic laboratory procedures, and phlebotomy.

In recent times, at many training schools the program has expanded the traditional role of the patient care assistant, providing a broad foundation of awareness and skills that are usually applied to provide care to patients in nursing homes. It even introduces you to the overall concept of problem solving, and the use of verbal, non-verbal, and written communications. Besides this, legal and ethical responsibilities and the role of a patient care assistant or technician are discussed.

It is the first step on the health career ladder. As a result, once you finish the program, you may be able to find the flexible work schedules and may also pursue career advancement in nursing as a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse.
