Diagnosing the condition of the appendix in order to determine whether or not a person suffers from appendicitis can be a tricky business indeed. The position of the appendix in a person's abdominal area as well as its size and size of the membrane which attaches it to the other organs within the abdomen, this membrane is open referred to as the mesentery. If the mesentery is larger than normal it allows the appendix to move around the abdomen, if on the other hand the appendix is larger than normal it can dip down into the pelvis, it may also become tangled with other pelvic organs in women. In some cases the appendix may move to behind the colon which is referred to as a retro-colic appendix. In most cases the inflammation of the appendix may act more as an inflammation of other abdominal organs instead of the appendix itself, this is mostly due to the fact that the appendix is confined to a small area and when inflamed it can produce a pain which is hard to pinpoint which is why when most patients are asked to tell the doctor the location where it hurts the often signal the area with a circular motion. What makes matters even more difficult for the physician or doctor in charge of this patient is that there are several other conditions which may mimic the characteristics found in a patient who suffers from appendicitis, the following is a list of conditions to which may be confused with the one we are discussing: Kidney related diseases: The right kidney is located close enough to the appendix which is why an implementation or abscess related to the right kidney may definitely be confused with the way appendicitis behaves. Pelvic inflammatory disease: In women the right fallopian tube as well as the ovary are located close enough to the appendix, a sexually active woman make contract diseases which are related to these two organs and the symptoms may also mimic inflammation of the appendix. Another group of conditions which mimic the symptoms of appendicitis are: right-sided diverticulitis, Meckel's diverticulitis as well as other diseases which affect the abdominal area.
