Are You Too Old For Braces?

By: Clint Jhonson Home | Health-and-Fitness | Dental

Long past your teenage years, but thinking of getting braces? Nothing should stop you from getting the straight teeth and beautiful smile everyone deserves. There is no such thing as an age limit, and it is never too late for adult braces. In fact according to statistics, well over 20% of patients having braces attached are adults and (believe it or not) many of them getting a second set of â€tinsel teethâ€.

When your teeth are crooked, overlapped or gap-filled, they are generally harder to clean and more prone to tooth decay. Your gums will most likely get inflamed and your teeth will eventually hurt. If this goes on, you will increase your chances of losing your teeth, as well as being more suseptible to other health problems. If dentures are not your idea of your dental future, then it might be time to make an appointment for an adult braces consultation. They might just be the best way to save your teeth.

Getting braces may also prove beneficial in preventing the pre-mature aging of your digestive system. Note that chewing is the first part of digestion. Chewing your food properly is important for your digestive system to work properly. If you can't chew well, the rest of your digestive system will need to compensate.

Getting adult orthodontic treatment through braces is similar to teenage treatment, with only minor differences. First, the treatment generally takes longer. Remember that as you age, your jaws and bones are more or less fixed in place and are thus not as flexible. Also, note that as we age, we don't heal as quickly as in we did in our younger years. Orthodontists need to exercise more gentleness with adult braces. Furthermore, your dental problems may have existed for decades, making them harder to resolve. In some cases, pre-treatment may be necessary, with some teeth needing to be extracted or some dentures inserted in between gaps. A few rare cases may need some surgery to expand the jaw.

For these reasons, attaching braces in some adults may be more complicated than teens. However, orthodontic treatment for adult braces is not only possible, with today’s technology, it is easier and more comfortable to get the straight teeth and beautiful smile you’ve waited for.

Getting braces later in life may involve some pre-treatment. But, your orthodontist can advise you on the most effective up to date techniques to prepare for adult braces. If you want the straighter teeth and more attractive smile, adult braces with the Damon braces system may be right for you. Expect your mouth to be a tender for a week or so and uncomfortable during the first few days. Eventually, the discomfort will disappear and you will get used to having metal inside the mouth. The discomfort caused by adult braces is generally minimal and very manageable. In less time than you thought, you will have straight teetha and a beautiful smile.
