Art Buying: More Than Meets The Eye

By: Ralph P. Brown Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

When buying art for your home of work space, you probably consider the subject matter...

* Does it fit in with the theme or other elements in the room?
* Another consideration is color (or lack of color) Do the colors compliment the colors in the space where it will reside, or do they contrast in a way that enhances either the piece of art or the areas it occupies?
* Size is no doubt on the list of things to consider. Does it fit in the space without being dominated by other things? Or is it so huge as to dwarf everything else in the room?

But how many people consider the energy or spirit that they bring into their home when they purchase a piece of art?

When something in a piece speaks to us we may not even know exactly why or what it is. It speaks to us in a language without words. We often may not be able to put into words why we are drawn to a certain piece of art. Something you may or may not be aware of is that there is a spirit that accompanies the art you purchase. There is not only the spirit or energy of the subject matter, there is also the spirit of the artist woven into and infused into each piece he or she creates.

Everything, whether animate or inanimate, has a spirit - and all spirits (because they are energy) are charged with positive and/or negative energy. It is my awareness of this that causes me to carefully consider what I bring to you as a viewer and potential owner of a piece. It matters what you invite into your home or work space.

Art is a relationship between the artist and the viewer that begins with the artist putting his or her thoughts, ideas, feelings and perceptions in visual form and then offering it for others to see. These thoughts, ideas, feelings and perceptions are charged with energy (positive or negative) and these are the spirits that accompany the artwork you purchase.

I really enjoy it when someone who has recently purchased a piece of my work tries to describe the effect it has on them and on the place they have chosen to put it. They are "aware" of something even if they're unable to put their finger on it. Of course I want to provide art that is unique, beautiful, intelligent, thought-provoking and spiritually inspiring. I want it to enhance and beautify your living space, but I also want to add in a positive way to the energy you desire and deserve in your home. Energy that nurtures your spirit, mind, heart and body.

There really is more than meets the eye when you buy.
