Assisted Living Facilities Are Very Different From What Traditional Nursing Homes Used To Be

By: Gloria Hao Schneider Home | Home-and-Family

Transitioning from the role of parent to grandparent can be rewarding because you no longer have as much stress and you have leisurely activities to look forward to. However, senior citizens have their own set of worries and concerns to deal with. Physical and mental health conditions seem to be the main concerns that weigh heavily on the mind as your body gets older. But more than health concerns most seniors become worried about being burdens to their children as they become more dependent on others to carry out their most basic daily routines. Seniors at the same time feel like they will be abandoned, lonely and neglected if they move into a nursing home. But nursing homes are not what they used to be. Assisted living facilities as they are now popularly referred to are the hot spot for seniors to spend their remaining years.

They have become so popular that many seniors like to make the transition from independent living to assisted living as soon as they possibly can. Most seniors join assisted living communities in their early 50's and 60's. Assisted living communities are found in almost every city across the nation. They provide assistance, recreation, and medical care to seniors and baby boomers. As seniors develop more serious health problems later on in life families may find more relief in choosing an assisted living facility specializing in a particular condition. For example Assisted living dementia centers specialize in the care of seniors suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Seniors are experiencing a better quality of life than never before by choosing an assisted living home to reside in. In the last 10 to 20 years, the senior care industry has undergone what can only be described as a revolution. Now, instead of traditional nursing homes as a senior's option, there are assisted care facilities, partial care and senior apartment communities where they can continue to live a life of freedom, creativity and independence while still obtaining the medical care and assistance they need.

Assisted living places can function just like apartment complexes or condominiums. Depending on your conditions and health problems, the director of an assisted living place will determine how much care you need and nothing more. Typically they will do laundry, provide meals, security and other basic necessities you required when you lived independently. The assisted living medical professionals are always finding ways to improve the quality of senior life even further. Medical professionals are always on call should you need them, which truly gives you the best of both worlds because you can live independently but have help should the situation arise. It's a place where senior citizens can develop friendships and have social interaction of their liking
