By: Kanika Jain Home | News-and-Society | Marriage

Weddings in India are a grand affair where all the close relatives and friends along with the community participate in the celebrations. India is a multi-cultural land where many religions co-exist and every culture has various similarities and dissimilarities which make each of them unique. Among many cultures, Punjabi culture is very vibrant and colorful where every individual loves interacting and are large-hearted. Punjabi weddings reflect their culture’s flamboyancy where youngsters and old people enjoy together.

The celebrations are grand and all the relatives from both sides wear beautiful traditional clothes where women wear Punjabi suits and men wear kurta pyjama or western suits. But, the most beautiful dresses are worn by the bride and the groom looking absolutely spectacular. The wedding ceremony lasts for about 3-4 days where a number of rituals are followed. For each day, the bride and the groom buy a new dress.

On the day of wedding, the Punjabi bride usually wears a suit but, these days they prefer wearing lehengas which has to have red color or colors of similar tone; as such colors are considered auspicious. The red color also defines the newly married bride. The bridal suit is usually studded with stones and heavy Indian work. It consists of stone work, zari work which is purely an Indian handicraft work and has lot of glitters enhanced by sequence work. Over the head a heavy work chunni is placed to cover bride’s head. She wears heavy jewelry which might be real or artificial. Jewelry consists of necklace, earrings, bangles, paayal (worn around the ankle) and a tikka for the forehead, these jewelry pieces are a must for the bride. During the rituals, the bride is gifted a set of bangles known as chuda gifted by her uncle which she wears on her wedding day. It is usually made of ivory and is in red and white color but these days many brides prefer wearing stone bangles which she wears for a long time.

A day before the wedding, henna is applied on Indian bride’s hand and feet which on the wedding day looks beautiful along with the wedding dress and jewelry. Henna is a part of Indian tradition and is applied on every festive occasion. To beautify the bride even more, professional make-up artists are called who do bride’s make up and enhances her beauty.

On the other hand, the Punjabi groom is dressed in a sherwani which is a long coat with traditional Indian embroidery and is worn over a chudidaar pyjama. Before leaving for the wedding venue, the elder male of the family puts pagdi (turban) on groom’s head and the female member ties sehra around it. A sehra is made of flowers, rupees or some other thing that covers groom’s face and is a part of Indian weddings. A pink color long cloth containing some money and coconut is tied around his waist and a traditional sword is given to him. The groom wears jutti (handmade leather shoes) on his foot which has a ritualistic importance as a game is played over them by the bride’s sister at the time of wedding. On the wedding day, the groom also wears necklace around his neck which is usually made of pearls or any other precious stone. The overall look is completed when groom’s bhabhi applies kajal in groom’s eyes and the groom is ready for his wedding.

The bride and the groom dressed at their finest look prince and princess and the wedding as a whole becomes a memorable experience. The married couples with their attires represent their rich Punjabi wedding culture.
