Convertibles have enjoyed an undying market since the early days of automobile production and this is because convertibles are preferred by many who are fond of open air motoring. Over the decades, several different styles and models of convertible cars †principally convertible sports cars †have been produced by auto manufacturers. For most of us, the moment we think of a sports car, it is a convertible top vehicle that instantly comes to mind. We always dream of driving a convertible sports car in perfect weather, top down, becoming a part of nature and enjoying some high-speed driving experience. Of course, the fact remains that not all convertibles are sports cars and not all sports cars are convertibles. There are usually only two doors and a folding or a retracting roof that any convertible car including a sports car has. For most sports convertibles, the collapsible roof section was earlier made of either flexible canvas or vinyl. But today, technology changes have made it possible to introduce convertibles with a collapsible roof section that is made from plastic, aluminum, or even steel. But, it must be stated that when hard material like steel is used, the vehicle is typically called a retractable hardtop and not a convertible. When considering purchase of a sports car, you must be clear in your mind whether or not a convertible will best suit your needs †though there is a passion among many to drive open sports convertible and experience the joy of an open road. Some want to use their sports car as everyday transport while others would be satisfied with a few summer romps every year. Though you can drive with your convertible top up during inclement weather, the fact is convertible tops are generally not as well insulated as regular car tops for cold weather. Convertible cars are quite different to the traditional fully closed vehicles. When opening or closing the top of your convertible, it is essential that you stop the vehicle completely. Remember that if you try to open or close the head of your sports convertible while you are speeding, the force of the wind could really damage the controlling mechanism. It is also necessary that you wear eye protection like sun shades to keep away any airborne wastes like dust, sand, or other particles from getting into your eyes. Make sure that while parking your sports convertible there are no trees in that area †more so, if you plan to leave your car with the top down. This is to avoid likely bird droppings or tree sap onto your convertible top. Soft tops made of vinyl, leather etc obviously require extra care and special maintenance. While buying sports convertible, make sure that the convertible you have selected can withstand road heat. If you intend to frequently drive with the top down, then you may need exclusive sealants and waxes for the interior. When opting to buy a convertible, you must take note of the security aspect. One should bear in mind the greater risk of theft and vandalism when it comes to convertibles.When driving a convertible, there is certainly greater risk of injury for both driver and passenger in a road accident or collision. It is for this and certain other reasons, the insurance costs of convertibles are much higher.
