Ayurvedic health system is a science that deals with the maintenance of health. Ayurveda has a divine origin. The science of ayurveda has been a gift of Lord Brahma to this world. This knowledge was then passed to Daksprajapati. After that the knowledge was given to Ashwini Kumar the two brothers that were known as physician of gods. These two twin brothers then passed this knowledge to Lord Indra, the king of heaven.

After seeing the sufferings on the phase of the earth, seven sages under the guidance of Maharishi Bharghava approached Lord Indra to find out the solution. Lord Indra then gave them the knowledge known as ayurveda to them.

This is a mythological aspect of ayurveda that has been mentioned in Arthava veda. But if we see things in reality it can be said that ayurveda is a science that developed with observation and a base of three humors i.e. vata, pitta and kapha. Diseases were developed with time and researches were done constantly to reach a consensus.

You might be surprised to know that that time, about 3000 years ago, the sages (can be compared to scientists) used to arrange meetings and group discussion and used to share their researches with each other. Various facts were kept and a decision was reached.

Various books were written about these researches and then were taught to students. Even their existed universities like Nalanda University (in Patna, India) and Takshila University (in Lahore Pakistan). These educational centers could be compared with the modern day's universities and was funded tremendously by various kings and rich peoples. Highly qualified teachers were kept in to teach students.

The ayurveda and its practitioners were looked upon with great respect and were constantly honored with gifts and wealth by kings and rich people. With such prosperous situation ayurveda reached to new heights. More and more people started adopting ayurveda professionally. All the eight parts of ayurveda reached to its prime and every day some new development were taking place. Even the surgery was reaching its peck of development and operations were performed with new advancements. With the help Kshar sutra, the medicated thread various surgeries were performed to the perfection without blood let.

Though the scientific knowledge was lacking in proving those procedures due to lack of scientific instruments but now, after researches conducted in various laboratories and hospital has shown that how scientific were the approach of those people in treating any ailments. Each and every procedure had a great deal of science involved in it.

Ayurvedic texts also tell about various herbs and their properties. This information is very necessary in prescribing a patient with the supplements that is helpful in treating him of that disease. Various classical medicines have also been mentioned according to ailments and also the diet is advised.

The main principle of ayurveda is to maintain the health of an individual and to treat a person suffering form any diseases. Ayurveda lays stress on various lifestyle methods that will keep a person healthy and disease free. For this almost every ayurvedic ancient texts contains a chapter that deals with daily regimen and methods that helps in maintaining the health in the best shape.

Hence it would be wrong to say that ayurveda is just another medicinal system. It has been a science that is developed after lots of observation and is time tested. Hence there is no chance that will be bad for our health and we will only be benefited without facing any side effects that the modern medicines cast on us.
