Barcelona For The Ultimate European Destination

By: Mathieu Quintart Home | Travel-and-Leisure

European countries have plenty to offer culturally, historically, artistically and even gastronomically, which also means there are an assortment of short city breaks to choose from. Whatever type of break you are seeking, whether it's a family retreat, a wild bachelor or hen weekend with friends, or simply a cultural experience that just can't be found back home, you'll get it here.

Add a dash of Gaudi and Dali, some wonderful galleries, a hint of ancient monuments alongside avant garde buildings, classy accommodation, dazzling bars and restaurants, and top it all off with a stunning Mediterranean shoreline.

The enchanting architecture designed by the Catalonian artist Antoni Gaudi feature some of the most important sights around the city, and tourists by the busload gather at the hill of Montjuic to take in the 360 degree views of the city which is a real treat. Take the Picasso walking tour and familiarise yourself with all his favourite places when he lived in the area for more than a decade, make sure to take in the Picasso Museum whilst out and visit the modernist Quatre Gats Cafe.

All over the city you're guaranteed to be enthralled at the art galleries and structures that represent Barcelona, but it is the Gaudi masterpieces that really stand out from the crowd. Shown in the 3 key facades are images of the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus, whilst on its 18 bell towers are various Catholic expressions, the stained glass windows are particularly striking too and not seen in any other cathedral in the world.

The Catalonian capital has an edgy appeal with a rich blend of everything you want in a city including culture and beauty, and of course a rich influence is found in the architecture, be it contemporary or ancient monuments. Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe, Barcelona Cathedral and the Hospital de Santa Creu i de Sant Pau are just a handful of the impressive architectural designs that provide a banquet for the eyes. The bronze fish facing the ocean is breathtaking just for its sheer size, measuring 35m by 54m. Made from stone, steel and glass, you can't fail to spot it as its exterior is covered with shiny metal plates that change colour in the sun.

There are also many more modern architectural gems in the district if you take a closer look, such as the relaxing and calming grounds of Can Framis Museum, the extremely energy efficient Marenostrum Tower and not forgetting the iconic Agbar Tower looming at the entrance of the technological district. Bars in Barcelona are empty until 2am onwards and there are plenty of them staying open late, although not clubs you can choose to chill or party all night depending on what you feel like at that time. There is a large number of live music jam sessions, jazz, rock, burlesque and clubs to choose from especially in the Las Ramblas area that get busy after 1 in the morning. Barcelona also has a reputable Erasmus scene where you can make new acquaintances quickly and party the night away in selected venues. There is a predominantly distinct house scene reflected by the number of clubs that keep that vibe alive the whole week. If you are weary of the Euro trash techno scene, then check out the rock and Latin clubs.

There's no need to splash out too much when visiting any exotic destination with its sumptuous array of history, culture, art, shopping venues and delicious cuisine. Everyone needs a change of surroundings from time to time and a few days away can give you time to see new things and connect with your nearest and dearest. Rental apartments in Barcelona are available in any number of shapes and sizes, from a simple studio room to apartments with 5 bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, and contemporary bathrooms. Most supply everything you have at home including fresh bedsheets, refrigerator, oven, kettle, crockery, satellite television and WIFI internet access. The rental apartment market in Barcelona is very well established by now so you should do some research and scout about to find out what there is exactly for you.
