Basic Skin Care Tips

By: Juliet Cohen Home | Health-and-Fitness | Beauty

Skin is the largest organ of the body. Healthy, beautiful skin is possible to achieve, but elusive to many. Good, basic skin care can help prevent many wounds. Good skin care involves regular cleansing with a gentle skin cleanser. Regular cleansing should be performed on an "as needed. Cleansing is a critical daily skin care step. It removes the dust and dirt that chokes the pores on the skin. Most people do this 2-3 times a day; this is adequate for normal skins. But,for oily skin type a more frequent cleaning is very essential-even 4-5 times a day, using either a soap or some kind of cleansing agent. Most cleansers contain oil, water and 'surfactants'. The oil dissolves oil on your face, surfactants dissolve dirt and makeup and the water washes it all away.

There are several alternatives to soap and water cleansing- creams, milks, lotions, foams, oils, gels and liquids. Avoid bar soaps as they tend to dry out the skin. A cotton pad doused in fresh milk is a cheap but equally effective cleanser. Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells, which cause the face to look dull. The build up of dead cells can also contribute to blockage of the pores causing acne. Facial scrubs help clean the surface of the skin by removing the dead skins and the dirt mechanically. European women have been using exfoliants for decades. Skin exfoliation is suitable for greasy or normal skin, but should be used with caution on dry or sensitive skin.

There are several ways to exfoliate skin: Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids. Scrubs work by removing the top layer of dead skin cells that tend to dull your complexion. If your skin is sensitive, use a synthetic puff or natural sponge. Men are exfoliating their faces every day by shaving. The razor removes the top layer of dead cells every day. Toning the skin helps remove any leftover cleanser or make-up that may have been left behind. A toner also helps restore the natural pH level of the skin, leaves your skin clean, clear and ready to be hydrated. Toners not only cleanse the skin further and help in removing any remnants of particles that you may have left behind but also cools, nourishes, hydrates and freshens up your skin.

It tightens up skin and close up any skin pores that may have opened up while deep cleansing the face. Toners must be alcohol-free as alcohol dries off skin. Toning close the pores, tighten the skin, and keep it from being exposed to many of the toxins that are floating in the air or other environmental pollutants. Sunscreens protects the skin from any form of sun damage, wrinkles, sunburns or rashes. Facials help moisturize and massage the skin. Homemade facials are good quick fix solutions to pamper the skin with almost no side effects. Exercise, Facial massage and a healthy diet regime can complement your skincare routine and help the skin look healthy and nourished always. Good moisturizer helps the skin to balance and restores any damage that might have occurred to it overnight.
