Basic Tips To Start Online Fundraising Campaigns

By: Mark Etinger Home | Business

Getting fundraising programs off the ground can seem like a huge hurtle to overcome. You know what your goal is, you feel that you have a good and noble cause, but you aren't sure how to get the word out and convince others to give donations. Online fundraising is a great option because it's such a quick and easy process for the donors. It's also such a broad medium, allowing you to reach many people over a short period of time. Getting started doesn't have to be daunting if you keep yourself organized. Before asking for any donations, you have to register your nonprofit fundraising organization. If you already were registered and are just moving to the online world, then you are covered. If not, check with your state attorney's office about the proper moves to make in legally registering your organization.

You'll want to market your organization outside of just your own website. Social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have extraordinary amounts of daily traffic. Creating accounts on both of these sites is going to get your message out to thousands of people. Once your accounts are created it's imperative you keep them constantly updated. No one is going to be interesting in following a Twitter account that doesn't tweet, or a Facebook page that hasn't had new updates in over six months. It's also a good time to directly engage people, ask for their input, their stories and why they are drawn to your cause.

Make donations easily accessible. Paypal is a quick and safe option for people to donate, for those who don't want to directly input any credit card information. Make sure that your donation buttons are clearly seen. You don't want people to have to struggle through multiple pages just to give money, most won't bother.

Having your charity sign up to be part of a mobile giving application or community will further expand your reach. Having people easily connect and give online no matter where they are simplifies things for the user. If they can access your fundraising page anywhere, anytime, it gives you an edge. If you have a Facebook page it's also possible to link this with your mobile application both ways, so people can access your page through their phone and also make donations on Facebook that connect to your fundraising mobile application. Everything is neatly linked together.

When writing a profile for Facebook or even your own website, be open and honest. You need to convince people why your cause is so important and how their contributions can help. Get people feeling connected and they'll be more likely to want to help.

Lastly, follow internet etiquette. Certainly don't spam anyone for donations or overwhelm donors with too many e-mails. You want to come across as professional as possible and not scare any potential donors away.
