Be Cautious When Using Acid Reflux Medicine

By: Nick Makaryk Home | Health-and-Fitness | Diseases-and-Conditions

In the event your doctor has prescribed any acid reflux medicine for you, while you ought to follow his instructions carefully, it would also be wise to consider the implications of taking such medicines over extended periods of time. There is no doubt that you have an issue with acid reflux, otherwise your doctor would not have prescribe such medicines, however here is some food for thought.

It is always important to understand what you are putting into your body, when taking acid reflux medicine there is the danger of possible side effects. Let's look at the ingredients and then go over what these ingredients can cause. The ingredients are as follows; aluminum hydroxyl, carbonate, calcium, magnesium and sodium. These ingredients could lead to the following, dehydration, diarrhea, constipation, hypertension, cardiovascular problems, gallbladder disease and even kidney failure. Of course many of us would not even be aware of this, and it is often the case that doctors do not share this information with you. After all, the goal at the outset is to control acid reflux and one does not think of the possible side effects that can occur.

It must also be noted that many people rely on their acid reflux medication to control their symptoms and do not take a moment to think about altering their diet so as to prevent these symptoms. Therefore they use the medication to provide instant relief and to avoid the inconvenience of changing their diet and therefore wish to continue to eat when and what they want. You must remember when you first feel the pain of acid reflux you have already damaged the esophagus. The pain that you are experiencing is acid from your stomach making contact with the esophagus; in turn, this can cause ulcers, strictures or bleeding. Let me remind you, once you experience this pain you have already done damage.

When you use acid reflux medicine as a crutch to continue your poor eating habits, you are not only damaging your esophagus and digestive system but also your health. The foods that are contributing to this problem are also bad for you in general. Acid reflux is an indicator of a poor diet, and over eating or eating spicy foods along with red meat and dairy will continue to contribute to your health issues. So if you continue with these bad habits, then expect nothing less that poor health and well being as a whole.

The common problem is that medicines just address the symptoms of your heartburn and does not deal with what causes it. Moreover, it is well attested that many of these drug based medicines bring forth harmful side effects which sometimes can be a problem in themselves.

So rather than rely on acid reflux medicine to overcome these symptoms, why not address you're eating habits so as to prevent this issue from occurring in the first place. You can begin to do this by eating less junk food, red meat, citrus fruits, dairy products and fried foods. Replace these with foods such as leafy vegetables, whole grains and fibrous foods along with drinking plenty of water.
