One of the best selling arcade games the Super Mario made its debut on 1981 with the release of Donkey Kong. The Mario series is a series of highly popular acclaimed video games by Nintendo. The Mario series include over 200 games, which has sold over 200 million copies over the world making it the best selling video game series of all time. Mario may be short but he is not short on starring roles in cherished Nintendo video games. The legacy of Mario grows longer by the year but still there is a lot of history behind the world famous plumber. The first incarnation of Mario Bros was produced by Nintendo in 1983 which included another character, brother of Mario Luigi. Mario was originally known as Jump Man. The name was changed after the developer Shigeru’s landlord Mario Sagale burst into his apartment one day and demanded him to pay rent. The hat was used so the developers would not have to come up with realistic hair movement; the moustache was used to make Mario’s nose more noticeable and overalls to make Mario’s arms more noticeable. Mario was also initially conceived as a carpenter. His occupation was changed to a plumber because of his appearance and the series of tubes being used more often in Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros was the all time best selling video game for over four decades with worldwide sales of 40.241 million copies. In 1993 a full length film was released featuring Mario. It was a critical and commercial disaster. On December 16th 1996 another series of Super Mario was released which was similar to Spyro the Dragon. It was based on a 3D platform called the Super Mario 64. Super Mario 64 was the first ever 3D game through out all the previous Mario series. Super Mario was on number two in top 200 games list which was ranked by Game Informer where as Legend Of Zelda was number one. The new Super Mario Series (Super Mario Galaxy) has been rated 9.7/10 by IGN. Mario eventually comes to the game’s hub world, which is more or less a giant spaceship equipped with several rooms and all of them having doorways to different galaxies. There are a few, if any, games as enjoyable as Super Mario series. In the platform games of Mario series, game play primarily involves jumping on the enemies and avoiding the enemy attacks. But later in 3D games close quarter fights were incorporated. There are different powers up options available in the Mario Series, which provide Mario with different options against the enemies such as throwing fire flowers, invincibility etc. The highest game rating was 97.07% which was achieved by Super Mario Galaxy 2. The Super Mario series had consistently strong sales. Super Mario is the best selling game on the Nintendo Entertainment System with two sequels Super Mario Bros with 18 million copies sold and Super Mario Bros 2 with 10 million copies taking second and third place respectively for the NES.
