I think it was Will Rogers who said "I am more concerned with the return of my principle than the return on my principle". How true that rings when it come to trading in the stock market! Yet I find myself receiving emails and being told sad story after sad story about traders who have lost a fortune trading! The emails and comments I love to receive, however, are the ones from students in my classes that are making a fortune because they took the time to learn the SYSTEM I teach in my LIFESTYLE TRADING WITH LEAPS 2 day class. When I first started trading over 8 years ago, I had no idea I needed a system to stay on top of my trades and protect me from trades going wrong. I was putting in so much effort learning to trade from scratch, and was so excited about trading, that in the beginning I made critical errors that were so unnecessary. What I have discovered after years of trading experience is you can't afford to trade without a system! I am not talking strategy here, you can pick any trading strategy you want, you will still need a trading system. * A system that does not leave your trade up to chance and your memory. * A system that alerts you to your next move, be it a profit or a loss. * A system that can quickly remind you what your thought process was when you entered the trade, so you know why you are in it and whether you want to continue with the trade or exit. * A system that can work from anywhere, work or play! Not just if you are sitting in front of a computer watching the market. * A system that allows you take your money out of the market from time to time but not miss a beat as to what's going on - life is too important to waste it watching stocks all day! I never intended to create this system as I wrote my LEAPS class, but it developed out of my love for my students and the pain I felt every time I would hear them tell me about a bad trade. I often would look at their trade only to see that they should have made really good money on the trade but they flat out ignored the proper exit until it was too late. They were trading without a system that would work the trade for them and allow they to live their life at the same time. This is what was truly meant by the saying "EAT YOUR CAKE AND HAVE IT TOO!" Yes, I said that right, anyone can have a cake and eat it. I want you to trade successfully while you live your life - not live your life trading! Let me explain why a system is so critical. Bottom line, if you are trading without a system you are basically set up to fail. I find very few traders can trade without a system, I to this day have not met one person that could pull it off and be happy with their trading! I must admit that in over 8 years of trading I have not found a single successful system out there for traders to learn. Yet, my system is basically fool proof, time tested and, bottom line, it WORKS! What I see happening to most traders, when a trade is entered, whether you are playing up or down, is they fail to write down the details of the trade and what their plan is. (Sadly even traders that know better). The next thing you know the trade goes against them and they think it will turn around soon so they stay in the trade. The next day the trade gets worse and they are thinking "I can't afford to get out now" so it spirals downward fast and, BINGO, the money is gone. They don't even realize how bad the trade has really gone at first, because it is in their head, and they don't see the actual numbers on paper. This disaster happens time and time again, but it is not necessary at all. If they had the trade in writing (especially if they were to use my secret 3 x 5 card system templates and the alerts taught in my LEAPS class) they would have quickly made the right decision - and they would have insurance to back up the trade in case it went wrong so they could make money regardless of what happens. I have had students email me that, using my SYSTEM, they have made $1,500 on a trade that went bad! It's a fantastic, fool proof system, but only if it is put to use. I guess like anything else in life, it wont work if you don't use it. But why do people choose not to use something so powerful, and simple? That is easy, you see even though it is very easy to use the system it is just as easy NOT to! The thin line that divides success and failure is to DO THE RIGHT THINGS WHEN OTHERS REFUSE TO - in the case of trading success . . . USE THE SYSTEM. Relying on your brain to remember all the criteria that make up a successful trading plan is not feasible if you want to be successful. Here is what I do: 1. Do not go to bed at night without having your trade and your plan for the trade in writing. 2. Set alerts for the upside and the downside of the trade. Draw pictures! 3. If you do not have a cell phone for alerts, get one. A pager is okay and a palm pilot, etc" the cost of this is minor compared to a bad trade. One good trade pays for a year or more of service. 4. If your trade is working, move your bail out alerts up to exit with a profit should the trade turn around. There is no sense letting a good trade go all the way back down and turn into a bad trade - not unless you need a TAX SHELTER! 5. When your trade goes right, make a list of the things you did that made that trade work. Keep a page of good trade notes and review it often. 6. When a trade goes wrong, make a list of what went wrong, and only review that it another trade goes wrong. Don't focus on this list, unless you want to focus on trades going wrong - but it is good to review what went wrong as soon as it happens to fix the problem. 7. Learn the power of the right place to enter a trade and to exit. I see so many students that have been trading for years that still don't get this! It kills me.
