Beyond Ebay: How To Build A Really Profitable Business

By: Robert Corrigan Home | Internet-and-Business | Auctions

How many people are content just to sell on eBay? The answer is a huge number.

eBay has many advantages for the newbie seller:

It allows the seller to test the market for a product for a very modest cost.

It is easy to setup an eBay and PayPal account and to transfer funds between these accounts.

It is easy to list a product which makes it a boon for the newbie seller.

It is an easy way to put your product in front of a â€world wide†audience.

IT ALSO COMES WITH A DOWNSIDE:

eBay constantly changes the rules and all of a sudden you may find that certain products are no longer allowed to be sold on site. This has happened to 2 of my own products in the past 3 years.

The monthly eBay fees add up frighteningly quickly, listing fees, final value fees and PayPal fees.

To grow your business eBay is not the only answer. So let us look at other methods. Amazon offers sellers a whole new area of opportunities. A good selling product on eBay will virtually guarantee the products success on Amazon.

THE ADVANTAGES OF USING AMAZON ARE:

Another sales outlet for your products, you can sell most of the items you currently sell on eBay on Amazon.

There is no bidding on Amazon, you set the price you wish to sell at all listings are fixed price and you can see the selling price of the same item from other sellers.

The percentage you pay Amazon is fixed as is the postal charges so you can easily work out your costs, there is no guess work involved.

No sale no fee, unlike eBay where you pay to list every time (there is only a listing credit give if a product sells on the second listing).

Often prices on Amazon are higher than the same product on eBay.
The listing process is a lot easier than eBay Amazon have their own product catalogues which include descriptions and product images. You can even add custom content if you wish.

Alternatively setup your own website, this is where most sellers give up, the though of writing your own website sends a shiver down your spine and the though of paying someone to do it is really beyond our means. Luckily there is a simple solution.

Many web hosting companies have easy to use template driven e-commerce websites that are pretty much â€plug and playâ€. These are easy to edit using a simple control panel. Individual packages differ but most will include the following even on a basic package.

Change the theme of the site.

Add or delete products.

Add options for the purchase of multiples of the same product.

You have NO selling fees so all the profits are yours you can even reduce the price and still make more money.

You can still accept PayPal as a method of payment, there may also be other options such as WorldPay, Nochecx or various other shopping carts.

Send out promotional e-mails by making your customers logon to your site.

You can drive traffic to your website by adding a compliments slip when you ship the product from an eBay or Amazon sale. Add your web address to an auto responder series and integrate it with your PayPal account.

Your eBay sales may well decline as you target your customers to the website but your website sales will increase and you will make a much healthier profit form the same products.
