Big Five

By: Phil Smulian Home | Travel-and-Leisure | Vacation

Big game hunters in Africa originally coined the term Big Five". The Big Five are African mammals found on the continent of Africa, namely, the lion, elephant, Buffalo, leopard and the rhinoceros. The name came from the difficulty of hunting the animals, rather than the actual size of them. Now, these are named this due to the difficulty of sighting them and their allusiveness in the African wilderness.

There are many other dangerous wild animals found in the wilderness of Africa; however, these big five are among them. The African Buffalo or Cape buffalo is the most dangerous of the big five, posing more risk to humans than any of the others and causing many human deaths each year. The African buffalo travels in large herds. They are very large (over 700 kilo's), powerful and intimidating animals. Take extreme special care and safety around these wild animals.

While on safari in Africa, most people will hope to see some lions when on tour. And often, tourists are not disappointed, Lions are not as elusive as the Leopard or the Rhino. Lions usually live in prides of up to 15 members, so, when you are touring in Africa, the chances of you seeing lions of various ages and sexes are highly probable. Most tourist destinations in Africa such as Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Tanzania are where you will be sure to see these amazing felines.

Elephants are the largest mammal in the world, and not difficult to spot in the veld of Africa. These are extremely territorial animals and it is recommended that you use an experienced and knowledgeable tour guide when spotting the big Five in African countries.

The African Rhino are extremely bad tempered, powerful and territorial mammals. They can be hard to spot in the grasses of the African plains. They are most predominantly found in South Africa.

Leopards are even more elusive than Rhino's, and it is often considered a very special occasion if you do happen to see this feline. They are nocturnal and extremely shy, they use trees for protection and observation and their habitat is usually a wide area, making it necessary to cover plenty of ground to see these animals.

When you are planning your safari, make sure that you choose an experienced and knowledgeable safari company, get the most out of your dream African trip, see the Big Five and other wild animals in Africa.
