Big Toe Joint Pain

By: altruist Home | Health-and-Fitness | Alternative-Medicine

Foot pain in the big toe is also commonly known as bunions. Most frequently charged in wearing tight, narrow and high heeled shoes, it seems that a lot of women are now paying the price of style and beauty with bunions on their feet. This problem is called Hallux Valgus although it is ordinarily known as a bunion and believe me, for those who battle this, it is a real pain. With this problem of the forefoot, a bunion looks like a major bump on the inside of the foot around the joint of the great toe.

A gout attack is caused by the appearance of uric acid crystals in your joints, and of course, this happens more often in your big toe. But where do these crystals come from? They are formed as a direct result of you having higher-than-normal levels of uric acid in your blood.

Normally, the uric acid that your body naturally produces, is processed by your kidneys, which then excrete excess uric acid from your body via the urine with a small amount through stools. This leaves low levels which your body needs.

It is a degenerative condition, which as it worsens will prevent you from walking properly. It is a disorder of the joint on the base of your big toe. Hallux rigidus is a form of degenerative arthritis which arises from cartilage damage on the joint. It can be very painful and cause stiffness and total loss of movement.

Be sure to keep your fluid intake high enough. This is important as fluid intake keeps your urine diluted - which helps in getting rid of uric acid. If you drink at least six glasses of water you will have a better chance of excreting uric acid from your joints. Your kidneys will be better able to get rid of the waste. You can have other fluids, like tea or fruit juices, in stead of some of the water. Avoid dehydration.

Gout toe if it is hereditary is a condition that you have to live with; you can't escape from the condition. In this case you should avoid foods that increase purine levels in the body and increase the levels of uric acid in the body.

Bunions are areas of the big toe that can become red and sensitive. Usually the symptoms develop over a period of time and can manifest themselves like:

The base of the Big toe is swollen and irritated
o The toe is abnormally bent toward the inside of the foot toward the smaller toes.
o The toe is red and can be painful at the joint base.

Usually this is the result of wearing high heeled shoes if you have narrow toes. Common padding can be used to help relief pain, irritation and potential infection, but surgery may be necessary to re-align the toe to the proper position. Bunions can occur in one or both feet.

These big toe attacks are extra painful because of the fact that whenever we move our lower body, the big toe moves at least a little bit. Movement of a gout infected joint causes major pain.
