The popular game of bingo has inspired many works of art in many genre including literature, poetry, music, dance and painting. A search of the web for bingo poetry will discover many different examples in many different forms and patterns ranging from romantic sonnets to doggerel and dodgy limericks. An example of the last one, attributed to a certain Gary Shorthouse, is: A particular young lady loved bingo But she was fed up of being just single She played online all night Which wasn't that bright As the next day, for her date, she was a no-show. They do not come much worse than that do they? There is a Bingo Dance on YouTube which would be terrible if not for the fact that it is performed by four very pretty girls in black leotards and brightly patterned miniskirts; very nice. Go have a look sometime. There are numerous songs about bingo. Some of these reference the game and some refer to the name of a farmer's dog. After all, everyone knows the bingo song about being in love that uses alternative bingo number calls. (Not all versions are equally savoury.) In terms of literature there are literally hundreds of books written on the subject. These include such topics as sure-fire ways of winning the game to romance and other fiction. There is even a full length play on the subject. Great bingo paintings are a little harder to come by. There are plenty of examples of prints of great paintings being used for decorative features on bingo cards, but there are not that many the other way round, though they do exist. Highly recommended is ‘Bingo Boogie Nights' which was painted by the Canadian artist Bev Hogue in 2004. It is one of her famous and highly collectable ‘Blue in the Face' paintings which feature people with blue faces. This particular picture is of a blue faced bingo player. Another artist called Dan May specialises in creating artwork on vintage bingo cards. He takes 5.5 inch by 7 inch bingo cards and paints images of sometimes strange and bizarre creatures on them using acrylics. They are rather attractive. It is great that so many artists find so much inspiration in this little game that so many of us love.
