BINGO is the name of the game, and it has become an American past time favourite. However, Bingo is not an American or British original. People overseas were the first ones to develop a passion for the beloved game. Several centuries ago, it was the Italians who first coined the game. In 1530, Italians played the game as a lottery. The love of Bingo scattered like the wind across Europe. The French were playing a slightly different version of the game by the eighteenth century. By the nineteenth century, the Germans utilized the game as an educational tool for children. The game was carried across the sea and landed in America. In 1929, a toy maker discovered the game at a travelling carnival. He quickly renamed the game, based on someone mistakenly calling the game by the wrong name. He hired a professor to create the cards used in the game. By 1934, after being approached by clergy to aid in fundraisers, the game grew wildly popular among Americans. Today, it has undoubtedly become one of gthe UK's and America's favourite all time games to play. The game is played everywhere across the globe. It is played in bingo halls, casinos, churches, and elsewhere. When you walk into a bingo hall, it can be quite a sight to behold. What you will see, most likely, are rows and rows of long cafeteria style tables, lined with chairs, and eager players. Sitting before you are players who have come prepared to win that jackpot prize. Some will have their lucky charms surrounding themselves, along with drinks and snacks. These bingo fanatics take the game very seriously. The games played in churches and charitable organizations are nowhere near as serious as the ones played in both the Bingo halls and casinos. They are light hearted, fun, and usually for a charitable cause. When it comes to being played in casinos, Bingo is big business. These particular games are heavily regulated by the US Gaming Commissioners. Usually with two major jackpot prizes per day, Bingo becomes a serious business. The tools necessary to play Bingo are: a Bingo card, a dabber and a person to call out the numbers. On the Bingo card, you will see what looks to be a graph. Across the top, you will see the word ‘BINGO.’ With each letter, it marks five rows up and down. You will also see five rows going across, horizontally. In the middle of the card is a block entitled “free space.” Typically, the idea is to get five in a row to score Bingo. There are different versions of the game that are played. The caller of the game will call out, for example, “B9.” You will look under the B column to see if you have the number 9. If so, then you will use your dabber to mark it off. Once you achieve the coveted spots for the game being played, you throw your hand up in the air, and loudly proclaim, “BINGO!”
